96 Cavalier won't start or even turn over emrocks72 07-20-2008, 11:08 AM
Please help!! My 96 Cav. stalled out at a stop sign yesterday. At first it sounded like it wanted to start again. After like 6 tries, the car stopped even making noise when the key is turned. Found a post that sounded similar, but yanking the fuses has not worked either. Have tried jumpstarting and yanking the fuses, so far no luck. My Dad is going to come check all the fuses to make sure none are blown, and I'm going to try disconnecting the battery for a little while to see if the computer resets. Someone told me it's like the car thinks it has an anti-theft system, but it doesn't as far as I know. Was told this is exactly how a car behaves if someone tried to steal it. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.Thank You Jacfourteen 07-23-2008, 01:26 AM Does the battery still have juice? turn on the head lights and see if they are bright. charging the batt. would be my first step to see if it will crank again. then I would listen for the fuel pump when the key is turned, next check for fuel pres. might be a bad fuel pump, filter or the inertia switch. that gives you someplace to start! Spyder3K 07-24-2008, 11:59 AM Yeah the battery's a good place to start. Once you get a new battery in there and run through simple power operating tasks, if the problem still persists, there's always other things like the alternator not holding a charge on the new battery, the starter taking a dump, or even the secondary igniton system that could help malfunctioning, like the coilpacks. But first things first, look into the battery. A fresh battery will help further anything. Related Links Enter the largest automotive community on the planet! |
