rotors

a couple weeks ago i started to realize a difference in how my car stopped(pedal pressure, timing, etc)so i thought hey ill have to get my brakes changed pretty soon. but like a fool i kept driving without getting them replaced then and there. so last week i was on the highway and it was wet raining outside, and all of a sudden the car in front of me decides to slam on their brakes because they were about to go past their exit, well naturally i hit the brakes and tried to swerve out the way, i couldnt stop for anything but luckily i manuevered good enough to avoid all the cars around me, and not hit anything or get rear ended. so i was like oh man i gotta change these breaks pretty soon, the next morning i asked this mechanic if he could come check out everything for me, he came over and said my rotors were bad and that they needed to be turned? he said he could turn the rotors and put new brakes on for me, so i was like alrighty and set the day up for yesteday. anyhoo he hadnt answered his phone at all and now im just like i got to get this work done now, i dont wanna mess around with this.

so i go to advance auto parts today and buy the "gold" standard brakes for my car and asked the guy there if turning the rotors was a good procedure and was it long term. he went on talking about how it could be bad if the rotors arent thick enough and they could warp and mess up your brakes, he said for the money your spending to get them turned, why not just get new rotors and change everything. i was like okay and bought the rotors. now i just gotta call somebody to put them on.

anyone know whats a ball park price range for somebody to install new rotors and brakes for the front of your car?


and would a place like pepboys give me a discount since i would already have my own parts, because i called them and they said it would be 169 dollars for the brakes and eight dollars for the rotors. im not doing that :grinno: id probably just read up on some manuals and watch a couple vids on youtube and try it myself before i shell out that much.


oh was buying the new rotors a good idea or would i have been just as good by getting them rotated ?

It's probably better to get new rotors. But u get what u pay for. If u get cheap rotors they'll warp soon. I got some rotors for my park avenue autozone.and I warped them in two months. here's the thread http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=900995

It used to be that you could get good Rotors from Advance... I used to get the Bendix Rotors( about $50 Each )... Recently we have found they are made in china instead of what used to made in the USA, we have found that the quality seems to have dropped off..

In most cases I don't turn Rotors.. Me and a Buddy work on cars a good bit of the time... For the price its usually worth it to simply replace rotors as opposed to having them turned... My feeling is, once a rotor is warped it will warp again..

I have had the Bendix Rotors for well over 3 years with a lot of abusive driving, and the rotors still stop the car smoothly... As well I have been using the Bendix Titanium Metallic pads.... No warp, and almost nothing for brake fade on long road trips...

Its really easy to do the Brakes on the 91-95 C Bodies, and 92-99 H bodies...:smile:

I have always just changed out the rotors. Napa has a premuim line rotor part number 86641 last year paid 57.00 each. Pads were cmx-7574 at 74.00 for the pair. Car quest also sells a gold line of parts. Just check and make sure rotors are made in USA or Canada, that will get you the good stuff. Plenty of hard braking for me...no warped rotors. Advance Auto rotors if they are made in USA or Canada, then you are good to go.

the rotors and brakes are fixed now, i got a mechanic to come out and do it for me. anyways everything seemed fine until i actually had to travel a long distance, after about 20 minutes of some stop and go driving downtown i started to smell a fishy smell coming from my car, and i immediately thought it was the brakes, and i heard a little bit of squealing sometimes. but i was like maybe thats normal when brakes and rotors get changed, and they are probably being broken in. should i be concerned.?
