So after all this time in modeling this is my first full resin build from scratch. I did build the Williams FW12 (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=900118) not so long ago but that was a transkit using Tamiya's FW13B as a major donor kit so I am not counting that.

Out of the box this is the most basic kit I have built. I know I go on a bit too much sometimes how poor these resin kits are in terms of value for money but lets look at this way.

There is no engine, the white metal parts are extremely rough AT BEST, the resin mould is knowhere near as detailed as plastic shells, most parts require twice as much cleanup as their plastic counterparts, there is very little if none at all cockpit detail (no seatbelts for instance), the tyres are hopeless and inaccurate (I have had to order a new set) and lastly but best of all we have to fork out nearly £100 to buy one, where is the logic in that I ask you?

So anyway, :runaround: phew... enough already... and on with the kit. This is actually one of the cheapest resin kits I could find when I first decided to buy one of these devils in box, it cost me £59 including shipping. It is made by the company Treasure Hunt who I am reliably informed are pretty decent... hmmm!

Here's what you get...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00598.jpg

This pic was taken after I flattened and straightened 4 of the suspension arms out (petrified they were going to snap), I have since discovered that the front wing was indeed broken and is now in two parts :headshake

So where to start, first up was the shell, all the sanding and cleaning I did outside as on top of everything else we have to deal with the resin is harmful if inhaled too much. I also added the two white metal winglets and have started the considerable filling job required to get these seamless which they will have to be. I also drilled out the two exhaust outlets and will replace the non-existent ones with some alu tubing later.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00816.jpg

The majority of the suspension arms were all spayed semi-gloss black and I have sanded and cleaned these also ready for a second final coat. The black will also act as a base for the CF decals to go on the wings etc.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00817.jpg

finally and again after a lot of clean up and reshaping to enable the shell and base to meet up neatly, I primed and sprayed this semi gloss black. I am not going to CF the bottom but will do for the exposed areas on top and for the sides. I have also painted the 'plank' in the same way I did for my old Ferrari 310B build.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00815.jpg

I am sure this build will be worthwhile in the end however, it is a stunning colour scheme but I am at a loss sometimes when it comes to these resin kits. I will shut up my whinging for the rest of the thread now I promise!!!

Is that kit by Club M? I have a EJ10 kit by them.

The most important step is to pre-fit all of your suspension and set your ride height. It's best glue all of your suspension together after you've bent all the attachment points for the ride height. Also it's better to paint the suspension after you've done all that. On setting the ride height get a good idea of how low the front wing will hang too.

Of course you'll have to drill all the holes where the suspension attaches first.

I love the way you paint the "planks", great work. Looking forward to seeing more...

thanks for your encouragements guys. I am just waiting for the Mr Hobby paint (care of Hiroboy), new replacement tyres (care of F1 Specialties) and some C/F Decal to arrive before I can go any further. Will add the latest pics later tonight.

I did EJ10 by Revell. That's crap :)
Looking good so far. Resin kits are challenging but on the other hand - usually it is the only way to build particular model.

Hi Veyron,

Thanks for the info. No the kit is by Treasure Hunt, I have another too - the Williams FW22, I hoping that kit is going to be better than this one, although it seems I have been unlucky as several guys over at F1M have built this kit and have had none of the problems I've had... just my luck

That's right...mine is by Treasure Hunt too.

Back in the day there were so many little garage resin casters I can't remember them all.

a little update while I'm waiting for the paint and decals...

wheel and seat are finished, I added a little detail to the wheel to make it look more like the lifesize version, the white metal one in the kit is basic. I used Scale Motorsport hardware for the belts and added the communications cable for the driver's helmet.

guys, a bit of advice please...

I have received the Mr Color paint but it looks a little thick straight out of the bottle, what is best to use to thin it? I have both enamel and acryllic thinners!

stevenoble
07-25-2008, 03:20 PM
Sean, I think this is the proper thinner.

http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=48_66&products_id=423

However I have thinned it with normal lacquer thinner, the stuff like the base coat thinner from Zero and this worked just as well.

thanks Steve, will pick up some lacquer thinner from Hiroboy next week, Im guessing that both my enamel and acryllic thinners will be useless? Thought Id ask before I go wasting any of the paint!!!:nono:

Such a great subject to model and I am looking forward to how it turns out.

I have not been tempted to spend ~100GBP on a 1/20 resin kit and judging by your comments I am not missing much. I will just content myself to whatever F1 models are available in plastic.

Kind regards,
Bill

update...

we have paint, well sort of...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00919.jpg

I am not at all convinced about the colour, this second pic is more of a true representation and to me look way too far green

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00920.jpg

this is the actual paint that is recommended in the instructions but I just think it looks utterley wrong, hmmm a bit stuck now!

ok the plot thickens, I have laid the shell next to the decals and it matches the 'yellow' on the hornets exactly, and I'm not exaggerating (as you can see in the pic). It also matches the lettering that goes on the wings too.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00924.jpg

Now I'm really confused, this still looks way to green and luminous compared to every reference pic I have which seems to show just a simply bright yellow! Anyone seen this car in the flesh as it were? Can you help me?

stevenoble
07-31-2008, 12:03 PM
Does it look like that in real life or is it the camera making it look 'greener' ? I would say that if it matches the decals stick with it.Or spray some ordinary yellow and try that aside the decals to see what it looks like? It might convince you the colour is correct.Or it may be one of those cars that doesn't look correct until you get all the decals on it, then it takes on a different appearance and the paint colour looks spot on.

I saw the car and under certain light it is greenish especially an overcast day. The color is spot on. Those Jordans were not yellow nor flouro yellow they were the flouro lemon lime.

thanks Steve, yeah I think Im gonna run with it, we'll see what it looks like with the decals on. It really is a spot on match for the decals though so I guess it's just me!

I disagree, I saw it race in person...it's definitely fluorescent yellow IMO.

I saw it in a rain soaked weekend at the first USGP at Indy. Overcast day and it had a definite green tint to it. Maybe not so green on a sunny day but it's the correct color.

Sean,
Grundski is correct. I have researched the car heavily for my Revell EJ10 (http://www.gpma.org/nmej10.html) and am in agreeance with him.
Although mine should have had a slight greenish tinge in low light, I opted to match the kit as I saw it many a time in bright sunlight. I did custom mix my paint and used a color called Ford Lemon Lime, so there is some green in it, but not very much. These fluro paints were developed specifically to appear brighter on TV(same as Ferrari Red and Marlbro McLaren Red).

Cheers
Nenad

I agree that it looks a little too green to how I remember it (and how it looks in photo references) but the photo references don't always capture the correct colour, and our monitors/TV doesn't always faithfully reproduce the correct colour.

It is likely that this is the correct colour (or very nearly), it is just that it doesn't match our expectation! If it were me I wouldn't change it.

I looked at all the images on F1 Facts and the car definitely looks more yellow and less green but the colour of the car does match the hornet colour. So, assuming that the decal has the correct colour, then your bodywork is the correct colour.

SeanyG
08-01-2008, 03:41 AM
yeah thanks guys, we have had a big ole debate over at F1m and basically the overiding feeling is that it is the correct colour so Im gonna stick with it. It matches the decals which isthe main thing and I guess the pictures I have just dont replicate the actual colour very well.

Anyway its staying and thats that! Just means I will have a green highlighter pen on wheels in the display cabinet when its finished :-)

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00925.jpg

as you can see Mr Hobby leaves a very matt finish, I will give this another 48 hours and then I will start clear coating. I added the little HP logos on the base to double check the colours are the same even with the decal placed on top of the black which it is thankfully.

As per Bill's build I have sprayed the inner sidepods yellow too as they look much better that way.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00927.jpg

No particular Grand Prix for this one although I have decided to build the Jarno Trulli No. 6 car. I guess it would be one of the early season races as this definately wasnt going to be a modified kit as its my first full resin build.

end plates...

I have used for the first time Hiroboy's, 2 part clear - all I can say is this is very promising stuff too, seems to have given me a nice finish straight away, these only had one mist coat and one wet coat!

update...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00933.jpg

rear suspension and transmission (well, a simple square block of resin actually) assembled and added to the chassis. The suspension was all sprayed semi gloss black, the drive shaft comes in very nice copper so is left unpainted which gives a nice contrast.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00934.jpg

this is all the detail you get under the shell, I dont like this but nothing I can do about it with this type of kit.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00935.jpg

test fit of the rear wing, all elements went together surprisingly well, I have a couple of small elements to add to the rear bottom section and also the back light. All centre sections covered with Crazy Modeler C/F decal. Unfortunately, I have made an error here, the insides of the endplates were yellow on the actual car and I didnt realise until I had the whole thing assembled... oh well!
Bill seems to have made the same boo boo in his build too so I'm in good company :-)

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00939.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00938.jpg

blatant attempt in the two pics above to show how good the 2 part clear from Hiroboy is, it has given me an excellent finish with very little effort as mentioned before, ie. one mist coat and then a wet one, congratulations Steve this is an excellent product!

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00940.jpg

Finally, a poor picture sorry but here are the exhaust outlets, I have used some bare metal foil for the hear protection and have also added to some staining with some black/dark grey/brown colours, the pic is poor though.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Jordan%20EJ10/DSC00941.jpg

these are the exhaust end piece I have made from some Alu tubing (there was none whatsoever included in the kit... tut tut!

decals next and then front suspension... nearly there!

thanks for following as always.
