98 Runs great but starts hard.

98 Chevy Lumina 175,000 miles runs great but starts really hard. Sometimes won't even start until the second try. It had a tune up not to long ago. But I think the fuel filter may be original (we couldn't get it off because of rust to change it). The engine seems to kind of knock but after is start runs great and has good mpg. Oil looks good as well... Any suggestions?

Get the filter changed one way or another. Test fuel pressure. Expect to measure 43 PSI KOEO, or about 38 PSI engine running (± 3 PSI).

Any suggestion on how to remove the old fuel filter? It is completely rusted onto the fuel lines and I really don't want to break those..

Alright.. I noticed today that when starting the car and letting it run and shutting it off and then turning it back on is fires up just fine...

Any ideas?

I wouldnt use a torch that close to fuel it could be a little flamable

I wouldnt use a torch that close to fuel it could be a little flamable

If you use your torch properly, , you will only heat the threads, else disconnnect the fuel and run dry. I have replaced many broken bolts, threads, etc. If you break the bolt, you will need to drill a hole thru it, then use an ' ez - out bolt extractor '. These are available almost everywhere- sears, walmart, autozone (i think).
If that doesnt work, keep drilling larger holes (slowly) 1/32" at a time until you can re-tap the threads. Use oil! Try to drill as close to center as possible, use a punch to get started. That's my best advice, you need a new one! Peace.

oops, in-line filter, just cut it out and replace.
