starting problems with a 99

we bought my buddys old truck a couple of weeks back because i totaled the last one:eek: any ways it some time starts but other times it starts for like a second but wont stay running but if you wait like 20 min it works but it now hasnt started all week i hear something like its passlock or something like that i was just looking for ideas and was wondering what can i do to fix it what do i need to replace thanks for any feed back

Does it crank over if so the Passlock is ok, I'd check fuel pressure if it will not fire up, you need 60-65 psi.

fuel shouldnt be the problem because once it started happening to him he put a new fuel pump on it and it kept happening supposebly the computer is f***ed because it started to happen after they put a remote start in i really dont kno thats why i figured id ask here but thanks for the input

There's your answer. More problems have been caused by improperly installed remote starts. There are some real garbage ones out there that don't work on some vehicles. I know someone in the business that installs these and he has told me he had seen many a screwed up installation riddled with problems like no starts, burnt wire harness or some other fried electrical components.

I would disconnect the remote start and see what happends, if the problem goes away, junk the remote start.

Z15 I've had the same problem and you are correct about the ignition bypass module, but you don't have to junk the remote starter - you can have the proper ignition bypass module installed.
I went through this problem until I ran into a guy that knew what he was talking about.
The original bypass module was never installed, instead they rigged some cheap resistors in it's place - saving the original installer lots of money but giving me lots of headaches.
I had this guy take a look at it and he found the problem in seconds, corrected it in half an hour and I've been trouble free since then which is about 2 years now.
If you want the luxury of a remote starter, you can find a resolution to your problem.

You certainly have a pk2 issue if it was starting but then stalling like you were out of gas (as long as the fuel pump actually worked). Check at the fuel rail to make sure you have proper pressure. Is the theftlight on or blinking? Has it ever came on while driving??? If so, that's a tell tail sign of a PK2 failure.

I'd also leave the remote starter alone but take the colum shroud off and trace back the small little wires that come out of the ignition switch. You should have something like orange/black (ground reference wire), yellow ( PK2 resistance), a white wire. They should have hacked into the black/orange and yellow wires. Disconnect what ever they have there and if they cut the yellow wire, reconnect it back together then report back.

Is this a diesel? When I put a remote start in mine it was not giving the glow plugs enough time to heat up.
