On my 99 olds alero, I go to pull off one day and the gear wouldn't move! It was totally stiff as if the car was off! It was running and I was ready to pull off but I couldn't pull down into reverse! Does anyone know What the heck that is??? Some one mentioned a gear shifting line going bad....anyone please...I can't pull off to drive and it runs fine :confused:

This is most liklely your shift interlock swtich. The shift button on the shifter handle cannot be depressed and you cannot change gears. You can kind of get around this (if your stuck) by taking the middle cover plate off and manually depressing the switch so you can shift it into gear. Once it goes to park though, your back to square one.

Thanks but Its fixed now! Some mechanic guy pulled out a pocket knife and went to work and in 5mins was done! Thank goodness...it was so simple too!

a year later and my gear shifter gets stuck again sometimes but i know the problem, now I cant find the part! A mechanic said it needs a shifter pin. has anyone else had this problem and if so, did you find a shifer pin and did it fix the problem???????:uhoh:

If you know what size the pin is most part stores can get you one.
Though Ive not heard of the pin just falling out.

Has the console or shifter been taken apart previously ?
