need info on Dex-Cool

Where do you get it, any where that's sold? Any brand recommendations?

Wal-Mart. Any coolant showing the Dex-Cool label is GM approved.

In most cases Dex Cool is not the issue but rather substandard gasket materials or the instance of other outside conditions including but not limited to air infiltration into the cooling system, poor /improper maintenance, or mixing with another type of coolant.
Using something not approved to meet GM standards can cause issues within the engine/cooling system and cost more money to repair. Stick with what is recommended by the manufacturer.

I've been talking to the mechanics at the dealership close by and they said to get it out of my car. Maybe they don't know what they are talking about. Yes there was a bad gasket design but it sure is funny that the big time lawyers at Dexcool settled to pay. They don't pay unless there was a reason. They would spend more money trying not to settle unless they had to. Put it in your car.

I've been using Dex-Cool for 10 years and never had a problem with my GM vehicles. It's formulated for aluminum blocks, heads, radiators and heater cores. It has an anti-corrosion agent for aluminum in the formula. Problems come about when coolants other than Dex-Cool are mixed with it. This can happen at lube joints that "top" up your fluids. They use anything that comes to hand.

Actually I didn't mean my response to have a negative tone, hence the ":lol:" emoticon after that sentence. It's frustrating with all the negative comments across the Internet on this subject. People are too quick to jump to conclusions. I've been to seminars on this for a few years and there are alot of reasons for issues that crop up with the use of this coolant and people are to quick to make assumptions about it. If you look at the lawyers' website you will see that as of now it is only has "preliminary approval". It's too bad many people who are affected won't see much of the reward monies as a lot of it will go to the lawyer's fees, and they have to meet certain requirements to be able to collect some restitution. I've noticed this law firm primarily deals with class action suits as they are more lucrative and revenue generators for the lawyers. Too bad GM "dropped the ball" in handling the situation from the get go, as we probably wouldn't be in this situation now.
Perhaps the mechanics aren't as familiar with DexCool as they should be, or are hoping you do switch coolants and then have issues relating to that switch and would need repairs, in which they can make money off of.:dunno:
I've had Dex Cool in a number of my GM vehicles for over 11 years now with only one issue which was a bad intake gasket related to poor design. New revised design gasket installed in 2002 and no further problems.

My car is a 2005 model year with a 3500 V6 engine. I don't see on the lawyers web site any mention of the year or engine model for my vehicle, so I don't think this lawsuit applies to me.

The owner manual states:

The cooling system is filled with DEX-COOL® engine coolant. This coolant is designed to remain in your vehicle for 5 years or 150,000 miles (240 000 km), whichever occurs first, if you add only DEX-COOL® extended life coolant.
A 50/50 mixture of clean, drinkable water and DEX-COOL® coolant will:
• Give freezing protection down to −34°F (−37°C).
• Give boiling protection up to 265°F (129°C)
• Protect against rust and corrosion.
• Help keep the proper engine temperature.
• Let the warning lights and gages work as they should.

Notice: Using coolant other than DEX-COOL® may cause premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion. In addition, the engine coolant may require changing sooner, at 30,000 miles (50 000 km) or 24 months, whichever occurs first. Any repairs would not be covered by your warranty. Always use DEX-COOL® (silicate-free) coolant in your vehicle.

What to Use
Use a mixture of one-half clean, drinkable water and one-half DEX-COOL® coolant which will not damage aluminum parts. If you use this coolant mixture, you do not need to add anything else.

Notice: If you use an improper coolant mixture, your engine could overheat and be badly damaged. The repair cost would not be covered by your warranty. Too much water in the mixture can freeze and crack the engine, radiator, heater core and other parts.
Notice: If you use the proper coolant, you do not have to add extra inhibitors or additives which claim to improve the system. These can be harmful.

Just so people feel better, GM quietly changed the formula Of Dexcool. I have used it since 99 with zero problems.
