2001 2500HD Fuel Gauge not working?

How do I figure out why my gauge is not working? Do you have to drop the tank to get to the fuel sending unit?

Needs a sending unit and this a very common problem with GMs.The tank has to come out.I am sure you can get just the sending unit from the dealer,you need to bring your insurance slip for the vin which the dealer needs to order the part.
