You could check the 30 amp 'STR ALT' fuse in the engine compartment fuse box. It feeds current to the alternator field coil - if there is no current into the field coil then the alternator cannot produce an output.

If the fuse is ok and all electrical connections at alternator and battery are clean and secure, then it's unlikely that you'll make much progress without the aid of a multimeter to make some voltage and continuity checks. If you have access to a meter then let me know and I'll write out a list of things to check.

Ok, but be aware that the car isn't safe to drive in its present condition. If it's receiving no charging current from the alternator then the battery will be continually discharging whenever the engine is running, and the voltage will be continually falling. When it falls to a certain critical voltage the engine will just stop without warning, leaving you stranded, and of course if that happened in moving traffic then it could be dangerous. So just making you aware of that in case you didn't know and were tempted to drive it.

I assume that the surging which you mentioned is being caused by low battery voltage, upsetting the electronic control systems. It will likely clear when the electrical system is back at normal operating voltage.
