97 MAP Sensor

Trying to get the old man's car fixed, and it is pulling code P107, MAP Sensor.
Can anyone tell me is this the sensor that is mounted on the intake/throttle body area? I could not see it that good as the lighting was poor. He is still getting good milage, and has been driving it this way awhile, so any harm in leaving it this way?

The MAP sensor is located at the right hand side of the upper intake manifold (plenum) opposite to the side with the throttle body. Underneath it is the PCV valve. Check the electrical connector to it and make sure it is properly mounted in that forked bracket. It has a seal so make sure that is good.

Can anybody tell me how this might affect the performance of this car if the bad one is left in place?
I can easy enough fix it but have to try and explain this to pops as to why it should be replaced:banghead:

You can operate with a flaky MAP sensor. All the PCM (computer) will do is see the lack of a proper output, set a respective DTC and use programmed default values. The MAP sensor responds to changes in intake manifold pressure which gives an indication of engine load. The manifold absolute pressure measurement is used to meter fuel. The PCM checks the MAP signal once the engine has been running for a length of time that is determined by the startup engine coolant temperature and throttle angle. Technically you could say every drive cycle. The time ranges from 2 minutes at less than -22 degrees F or to 1 second at more than + 86 degrees F. The MAP sensor signal is also used to test the EGR valve.

So the first step is to make sure engine vacuum is good which includes sealing where it mounts. Next you can check the PCM 5 volt reference signal at MAP input and then the output. MAP output signal varies from .1 volt low to 4 volts high. In most cases where a P0107 or P0108 DTC sets it is a bad MAP sensor.
