97 z24 whine in 1st and 2nd

I have a 97 z24 and i'm going to change the clutch sometime in the not so distant future, my question is that when i get on the gas hard in 1st and 2nd the transmission makes a whining/howling noise (kinda like when you back up fast). After doing some research some say that a throwout bearing can make this sound, but it sounds like the tranny to me. Also, I don't know if its related or not but a few months ago the pass side axle seal went out and when I replaced it the tranny was about a quart low. So what do you think it is, the throwout bearing or the tranny? If its the tranny I'd like to change it when I do the clutch since it'll be out anyway.

Yeah, when I replaced the seal I had to drain all the fluid so I refilled it with two quarts of penzoil synthetic syncromesh gear oil.

Is possible the TOB is bad, bad bearings do make a howling whining sound when they go bad and wouldn't be the first time GM's Master cylinders caused TOB to go bad either. They revised the one for the Getrag tranny in 2005 when they figured out that issue.

that's good news to me, I don't want to spend the money for a new trans. I've never heard of a man trans going out at 118k miles anyway (my ranger made it to 240K miles, even though I know the two trannys are completely different). But when I have the tranny out is there any way to inspect without tearing the whole thing apart? I'll do the obvious like change pres. plate, tob, clutch disk, and pilot bearing. do you think I should change the slave while I'm at it? I haven't even looked yet, are these internal or external slave units? thanks for the help!
