I have a 1996 Cherokee 4.0 auto. 150k miles on it... The a/c has not worked in a few years and I was told it would cost several hundred to fix. My question is this

Can I remove the a/c compressor, lines, and etc and improve my gas mileage? i am also considering removing the condensor and the tranny oil cooler to free up the front of the radiator. when i take out the compressor do i get a shorter belt or is there a special pulley to replace the compressor?

i put a new radiator in it a few years ago... the tranny cooler has been giving me headaches so i just hooked them back into the radiator... i only use the vehicle in ny winters and i don't tow or haul anything with it...

thanks

*Removing the AC compressor will not improve gas mileage. The clutch mechanism should be disconnected and freewheeling

*You can make an on board air compressor out of it for re-airing your tires

*If you take out the compressor a different belt is used:
1 BELT, Accessory Drive, w/o A/C, w/Power Streeing
5301 0284 1 1994
5303 1118 1 1995, Early Build, w/o A/Conditioning
5301 0257 1 1995, w/o A/Conditioning
5301 1035 1 1995, With A/Conditioning

Kind of off topic, but how do you make an onboard air compressor out of it? my AC doesnt work, just wondering if i could put it to good use. i just prefer the windows down.
thanks
