okay well i got my mazda rx8 and im always beating people till my govner kicks in at 120. can anyone tell me how to get rid of the govner cause its top speed is truley 240 but i cant get over 120 can anyone give me some help or sites to go to to get a chip

There is no way you will go 240mph! I believe gotian said the theoretical top speed was 156 or 159 mph, but I may be wrong. Either way...nowhere near 240.

Knowing a good deal about the RX8... since i own one.... and have done RESEARCH... the gearing in the tranny will NOT let you go anywhere near 240mph....

In fact, if you have the 6speed... 6th gear doesnt have a limiter... its drag limited.. and with its lack of low end torque about the fastest youll get it is 150mph... My personal best was 141...


And of you have the automatic, do the RX8 world a favor and burn it... they should have never offered an automatic RX8.

Auto's are limited to 125 and the Manual from 2004-2006.5 are drag limited to 168 depending on wind resistance, 2007 models were supposed to be limited to 140-145 though I dont know anyone who has been crazy enough to test it.

If you have an auto then you might want to look into the racing beat reflsh which will increase your power from the 140whp you have now to about 155whp and it will also increase the limiter somewhere around 135. Honestly you dont need to be going that fast in any car unless youre drag racing it. I have done it in both the RX-8 (130 mph I didnt want to take it any further) and I top my jetta out at 142 mph (which was extremely scary with those winds) and i wont do it again because there is no need to.


In all honesty the theoretical top speed would be 190-200mph since in 6th every rpm after 1.5k goes like this 2k = 40mph 3k= 60mph 4k = 80mph and so on.

The only thing I cna possibly see in our situation is our intrepid poster is in a seriosly misinformed state due to bad communication. Allow me:

OP lives in US. In US speed is measured in MPH. He has an auto RX8 that is topping out at 120ish mph.
OP looses races as races go beyond 120MPH. In Kansas, I could see that being the case on the wide open nothingness.

Yeah i know, all in theory though as the car does not have nearly enough power to go higher than an average of 150-160 on a favorable day.


Also that makes alot of sense what Rob said. Either way a flash wont get him to 150 mph in an auto.

Do you have the auto? or 6 Speed? the auto is also a lot less HP than the 6 speed and youll have a harder time going that fast. the RX8 wasnt designed for straight line speed, it was designed as a car with superb handling and good looks.

He obviously has an auto if he cant hit over 120 mph.

Auto - 140-150 whp 110-120 wtq
manual - 170-180 whp 125-135 wtq

Auto before 2007 - 4 port engine
Auto after 2007 - 6 ports
Manual - 6 ports

Auto before 2007 - 7k redline
Auto before 2007 with reflash - 7.5k rpms
Auto after 2007 - 7.5k redline
Auto 2007 - no change with reflash
Manual - 9.3k redline
Manual reflash 9.5k redline
Manual with cobb handheld reflash redline 10k

Auto suspension is softer than the manual unless the buyer purchased the vehicle with the sports package upgrade. the manuals suspension handles better.

ok, so this is how the race went down:he had a hemi cuda, i dont know wat year tho

i was visiting my cousins down in Phoenix, Arizona and the 2nd day there my cousin told me that he knows a friend that loves to race his car so i told him that i wanted to race his friend. he said he'll go call him.

so 2 hours llater im driving on the highway and my cousin's friend is drving at the same speed i am: 65. so he honks three times and we floor it. im heading into redline so i shift it into 3rd, at that time i was going 95. and the other guy is 4 car lenghts back. i look at my tachometer and it reads 7000 rpm. when it hits 8000 i shift into 4th and im going about 115 and pretty soon i hit 140. and i shut it down at 145 and i look back and he is about a 3/4 of a bus lenght back.
