I had fun building my Pug so I thought I'll do another rally car, this time, a Subaru. This will be the Tamiya kit of the 2002 Tour de Corse. I will be building Petter Solberg's machine.

I worked on the body first, giving it the standard treatment of sanding, panel lines and primer. Here it is after a few coats of TS-50.

The chassis is also painted the body color, with the "engine" and other parts painted.

That is all for now. Not much progress but good to have another project under way. :D

Great start. That paint looks great; is it already polished?

Not polished yet. I plan to decal, clear coat and then polish.

Excellent. If this turns out anywhere near as good as your 206, I'll still be mightily impressed. Good luck - not that you need it!

Great start! I built this kit as Solberg's car as well. Straight forward build with one note : There is a mold seam at the top the clear windscreen that needs to be sanded out. I missed it, and laid the decal down on top :screwy:. It's not a disaster but it's there. Keep up the good work!

No, I don't have an AB yet. I wish I can take the credit for the nice paint but I didn't really do anything different that what I usually do. Good paint and a little bit of luck I guess. :)

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I have some progress, but no pictures until maybe tomorrow. I laid down most of the big yellow decals. They went on without a problem. Also chopped up and made the front dampers and painted the brakes.

btw, specialstages, thanks for that tip. I will watch out for that. :D

I haven't really had time to work on this for the past few days, but I'll show a few pictures of what I had done until then.

here are the brakes and dampers, with scratched coils and the discs black washed

here is the body with some of the big yellow decals on. Went on superbly, wish every Tamiya kit came with Cartograf decals. Panel lines are inked and the window frames painted.

Interior is almost done except for the dash. There is a few things that is left to do on the body but that's it.

Anyway, some progress pictures. Painted some of the bits for the interior. The co-driver's "foot well" is CFed with SMS carbon, and I used thin pieces of BMF for the silver ties of the fire extinguisher and oxygen tank(?). Petter's helmet is made, the decals are a bit small but it looks okay. I screwed up on Phil's helmet because for some reason I painted it TS-50 when it's supposed to be half white and half green. :banghead: So now it's sitting in an alcohol bath.

I used Scale Race Car's nice seatbelt hardware and Studio 27 seatbelt material. The pattern on the material is a bit out of scale, but it is much easier to work with than the ribbons I used for the Pug.

Bits of the rollcage painted and ready for assembly.

And a mockup of the dash-less interior.

That is all for now. I expect that the next update will be the last.

The Subaru is done!

These pictures were taken before it was finished. I'll take some nice pics of the completed car tomorrow without flash.

Anyway, more boring progress pics.

I covered the doors with CF decals from F1 Specialties. Then clear coated with Gunze semi-gloss top coat.

Some pictures of the completed body, minus some antennaes bits. Headlights, mirrors and the air duct are covered in CF.

Looks great. Which carbon fibre decal did you use on the front lights? They look about the perfect scale in that last photo.
Cheers,
Grant.

Hi Grant,

I used carbon decals by Modeler's. http://www.hlj.com/product/MDLD924
The F1 Specialties decals are very similar in the fineness of the pattern, but slightly lighter gray color.

Hi guys

Have just found this site & been having a bit of a look around. Great Scoob Dave (especially the paint/decal job), but to be absolutely authentic as a WRC02 (& this is a bit nit picky), the bottom of the front spoiler is different to the WRC01's. If you look closely at pics, you'll see that the middle of the unit doesn't have the 'venturi effect' evident on the 01 car, but has a piece approx. 2" deep running the full length of the front splitter. I don't have my refs handy but IIRC, there are some subtle detail differences to the interior layout too.

Thanks for digging up my old thread. ;)

I didn't have many ref pics while building this kit besides the box art and a few blurry ones I found on Google. Maybe you can show me those pictures in question so I can fix those mistakes in the future. I'm planning on turning the Rally Japan 04 version into the '03 car, so any pics of that will be tremendously helpful as well.

What prompted me to look a bit further into the 01/02 differences was when I looked at the front of the box. I then went back to my video of the 02 Coesica (I record every round of the WRC off cable) & that confirmed the different front end arrangement. Apart from that, refs have been pretty thin on the ground.

As to the WRC03, the most significant difference is the air vents on either side of the front spoiler - they don't exist on the 03 car. At 1st I tried plating them from behind & filling the hole - & then I found out there's a resin replacement made by Reji (IIRC) avail from MediaMix & not horribly expensive. The internal differences are:

*the little square box moulded on top of the transmission hump needs to be shaved off
*part C17 (fire bomb) sits behind the drivers seat
*part C1 (battery box) doesn't exist at all in that position
*part N15 (rear shelf) is completely wrong. it needs to be substituted with that part from the 01/02 car
*the remote damper cylinders moulded onto the rear of parts B24 &25 have to be removed

From memory I believe that's the extent of the mods. TMMI did a build of the Japan 04 car backdated to an 03 some time ago, which shows these mods. I'll dig it out tonight & let you know which issue it is so you can order the article from TMMI.
