Ford 4.9L 300 6 cylinderjwall77 04-11-2008, 01:16 PM My friend said that the ford 300 6 is a piece of junk motor, and he says his mustang 3.8L v6 is better and would be better in a truck. i dont believe him AT ALL, but he doesnt believe a frickin word i say. So if anyone could back me up that would be awsome!!!!! wafrederick 04-11-2008, 08:55 PM He is full of it.The 4.9 straight six is a great engine that cannot be killed.I know of one with just over 300,000 miles on it and still runs in a 1991 f150 2wd FNA 04-14-2008, 04:27 PM " i dont believe him AT ALL, but he doesnt believe a frickin word i say" So what do you care? You don't believe him, he doesn't believe you. you're even. If it gets you upset, here's how to show him. Next time he says it, get in your truck, start it up and drive away. dandycamp 06-09-2008, 03:09 PM That v-6 ford engine is junk, I had 3 of them. head gasket problems, replaced heads, bolts, there endless work. The engine wont work in a f-150 it would fry under load. I have had 3 300 6 cylinders, a true work horse. I tow a 24 foot camper, and can pull down the road at 70 mph if I wanted to, and thats all day long.. I seen 300 6 cylinders go over 3000,000 miles, try that with that v-6 " after about 5 head jobs you might get there" inafogg 06-09-2008, 05:13 PM 247,000 K on my 92.....its a great truck alexclayborne 06-21-2008, 08:40 AM no, not at all the 300 is a great piece of work khadma 06-22-2008, 03:24 AM It was sad to see the 300 leave the line up about ten years ago. These engines could put up with so much abuse, it was amazing that these things could keep running (experience here). I have one in my Bronco and another on an engine stand wainting in the future project line. The 300 is a great engine and surpasses any 5.0 in a truck. dandycamp 06-23-2008, 04:27 PM This is my 4 th 300 -6 and in and 1/2 ton ton and the others in 1/2 ton trucks, One of the trucks went 345,000 miles , and still ran when I traded it in. You can shove your foot in them all day long fully loaded, and its right back for abuse the next day..They will never build them this tough anymore. They have more main bearings than a v-8, and to me it was a mistake when they quit making them, My neighbor just bought a 2002, 4.2 L v-6 . and we was talking around one day about my 1990 300 6 vs the 4.2. So I said lets hook my 5,000 lb camper behind it and see who can drag it down the highway the fastest up this incline out on the highway, not to far from our home.. It was a bet. he hooked up to my camper and down the road we went. It top the highway 54 hill at 35 mph, at the foot of the hill he was at 60. Them my turn was up with him as my passenger. I hit the bottom with the same 60mph, and topped the hill at 50. He seen then what the 300 was built for.. I won that bet... I'm still in search of a 85 fullsize bronco, I had one back in 97 that got hit on a gravel road and totaled out. It had the 300 in it, and about every options.. I loved this old ford tough built bronco. To me they should have keeped the last body style going, but 4 doors on one. I have 2 friends with expeditions, that both had to replace very expensive transmissions "one of the 2 using the expedition as a mini van" I hate to say this being a die hard ford man, buy chevy builds a better transmission in the newer ones, with a tow mode . My son has a 99 1/2 ton 289 v-8, its really made me stop bad mothing chevys, that little engine is full of power, and can pull my camper right down the road "I feal bad in saying that" but ford needs to take these motors apart and redo some of there thinking, because I have drove that one, for about a week. its 4x4, and I have seen anyway from 18 to 21 mpg from this powerplant. Ford 5.4 is a runner also, although you will never see that mpg in one. The 4.6 wont even hit that with an extended cab 4x4. like the chevy.. I have worked on cars since 1978, and still will only buy FORD.Or Dage mini vans.. If I bought a chevy thats where my trouble would begin.. My luck is weak with them, and the bodys are not built ford tough. I had one 93 chevy 350-4x4 short bed- 5speed stick. The 350 allways ran good but sucked the gas. The problem I had was body parts, the doors on them models are thin and cheap made, I replaced the passenger side power window motoe 2 times, the clutch was built poorly, and the transmission went out. just a note never buy these years 5 speed stick, there hard to find, and when we did we had to fork out 1,000.00 bucks for one with over 100,000 miles. I had trouble with front cv joint boots, balljoints, and had to rebuild the complete front end""" Some might have been my fault buying an old truck, with many miles. :grinyes: It was sad to see the 300 leave the line up about ten years ago.
