timing job done: idle acting up!

ok so the timing belt is done, i did it last weekend with the balance shaft belt, and the tensioners, and the water pump and all pullys. well, the car runs and drives GREAT! as long as i dont let it idle, when at idle (750 rpm) it sounds like shit... its pretty rough, and i can feel a little viberation, but as soon as i rev past 1k, its perfect! i havent reved it passed 3500 (including while driving) and i'm almost positive that all the timing marks are lined up 100%... could this be an issue that will resolve itself over time? or is my exhaust cam off by one tooth? (that was a bitch to get right and i think i got it close as possible before putting it all back together... let me know some thoughts!!!:banghead:

Check how everything is lined up again. Only way to really tell if the timing is off. If everything is fine, then there's something else. Mine wasn't shaky after the change, and it should be the same as before.

Did you get rid of the balance shaft or just replaced the belt?

Timing has got to be off by a tooth.

kept the balance shafts, just changed the belt, and everything with it.... is it safe to drive? it just idles like crap, the rest of the time it drives PERFECT! so can i drive it till friday, then fix the damn timing? :banghead:

EDIT: no cel, nothing... is it bad to run 1 tooth off? (i'll be changing it back on friday, just curious)

No you'll be fine. When I did mine, the timing was off by one tooth and didn't realize it until a little later. I just lacked performance. Idle was still decent I guess trying to think back. You'll be fine though as long as you don't hear your valves hitting your pistons. That usually takes 2 teeth though.

what does valves hitting the piston sound like???? :banghead: i would know right??? i already put about 20 miles on it... and its "ticking" but i think it was just lifter tick?

If the valves were hitting the pistons you would know it. The motor probably wouldn't run very long either.

If the valves hit the pistons, they would only do it once and the motor would kill. You'll be fine, just don't rev the piss out of it or drive it hard until you get it fixed.

alright! :naughty: lucking out AGAIN! nice! well, i have to hold it at about 3200-3500 rpm every day on the way to work, but thats only because the speed limit is 75mph... and everyone does about 80-85... should i be concerned with that if i dont hit any type of positive boost pressure? i usually dont hit any type of boost when just normal driving, but i would like to know kinda like a "safty zone" for the car running in this condition? like 4500rpm? 5k? something like that?i dont want to go their, but if i pull out in traffic, and i need to go, i want to know how hard i can push it if i NEED to and still be safe...

I wouldn't run it any harder than you have to. Higher rpms on the interstate should be fine but I would try to stay out of boost.
