Lesabre starting/stalling problems

OK This is my first time on one of these, so please bear with me. I have a 97 Buick Lesabre that I have owned for about 6 months. I have been having a random problem where it will just die while Im driving and it will just crank but not start. If I let it sit for a little bit it will restart with no problems. The time it sits before restart is random and it was just doing it on hot days but now it seems to be anytime it feels like it. When it stalls I can try to restart it as many or as few times as I want but it just seems to be a time thing. It also has a kind of loud humming noise when I shift into R or Drive, and Ive noticed that the feul gauge goes up and down randomly. I never see the check engine light come on, but sometimes the security light will just stay on while driving. Oh yeah and if I try to rev it up past 4000rpm it wont really go. It just hesitates, it doesnt wnat to go past 4. I had the feul pump and filter changed about 3 months ago with absolutley no results after the guy told me that was the problem. I have had it in 3 shops to test for codes but nothing ever comes up because, of course, it works fine for them. PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME. I have to drive to Denver for work in 20 days and I dont think it will be a fun trip with the car in this condition.

Welcome to AF, this is not the type of problem that can be resolved in this environment, first step when it dies and will not restart is to check for spark at the plugs. BTW the engine has a rev limiter and will not go over 4k in neutral for obvious reasons.

Sorry im kind of a rookie when it comes to this stuff. Ive read alot of posts on here about similar problems and most of the talk about the ICM and crank position sensor. Could that be my problem.

In addition to what Max mentioned, if you do not have spark when trying to start, suspect the ignition control module (ICM) or the crank position sensor (CKPS), both can be heat sensitive.

Could the spark plugs and wires alone be doing this. One of my plug wires got hit by the fan and let a small portion of the white part exposed. I had this problem before the wire got hit by the fan. My grandpa owned this car before me and Im not sure if he stayed up to date with the plugs and wires. Thanks for your help.

No, one or two plug wires will not cause a stall, it may run rough but that is all. You should replace the damaged wire anyway.

OK good. I have one more question. Where is the ICM normally located on my car. I know where the crank position sensor is it just looks hard to get at. My uncle is a mechanic but he is on vacation for a week and I dont have that kind of time to wait. Should I start with the CPS and then go to the ICM if the problem doesnt stop?
