I have read the sticky thread at the top of the page about this dreadful procedure. however I have noticed that no one ever mentions the alternator. Do you have to take off the alternator to replace the intake manifold gasket on the 99 3100? It dosent look like i have to just by glancing. Also is it necessary to unbolt the motor mount and fiddle with the power steering pump or can i leave them all bolted in? I would like to avoid any unecessary work.

You have to right idea, only take off what is in the way, that is how the techs do it.

According to the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for 2001 Malibu you need to remove the alternator and bracket to remove the right/rear valve rocker cover.

Your right on the money. The alternator has to come out to remove the bracket to remove the valve cover.

Ok thanks guys. After really looking at it i see why you have to take it off. One more question though. the bolts on the lower manifold. Is it ok to re-use the old ones if you clean them up and put loctite on them? Most people seem to buy the replacement bolts.

I just did the intakes on my 98 and as was said you have to remove both the generator and pwr steerning pump. How far were you going with your overhaul?
