Real Deal or Not?

Are there any mechanics out there who can confirm whether this is an actual shop manual for a 92 Lesabre.

It seems a bit small to me. I bought a set for a 97 Old Aurora I owned which was like two Webster dictionairies.

I had a similar experience recently with a manual for a '90. It was a good price so I bid on it. Just before the auction's end I get an email from the seller telling me he just found out that what he is offering is not the complete set, that there is another volume which he doesn't have. I'd email the seller to confirm that , that is the only volume for that year/model.
Here is the link to the actual auction I was bidding on:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&viewitem=&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.ebay.com%3A80%2Fsearch%2Fse arch.dll%3Ffrom%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dm37%26satitle%3D 230230855714%26category0%3D%26fvi%3D1&item=230230855714

It appears to only be the Shop Manual (quick reference), not the Factory Service Manual (FSM) which is like the Webster dictionary. :frown:

I am not a mechanic but I can answer your question. The book you are looking at on ebay is 1/2 of the complete manual. There are two books, the "service manual" which you see in the auction, and an "ESM" or Electrical Systems Manual which covers tons of ground. Together they are your complete manual. The ESM is a very large floppy page thing bound with a spiral ring.

You really need both and the price on that auction seems high. I think I paid less than $50 for BOTH manuals together on ebay.

It IS the real deal, but not the complete deal. Also, it is much bigger than it looks in the picture and is fairly thick (maybe 1 1/2 inches.)

What you want is this:

If I was you I'd make sure to win this auction if you really need the manual. If it were me I'd "throw down the gauntlet" which is to me my best ebay method. What does it mean? It means really think about what something is worth to you. What would you pay for these manuals brand new? Then, bid the very highest you would be willing to pay even if it was not in any way a bargain at that price. Bid way more than you think anyone else would pay but still within your limit of reasonableness. Also, do it early in the auction. What does this method do?

One, you will almost for sure win the auction, and

Two, there is a great chance you will pay LESS than you would have than if you barely upped the bid or waited till the last minute. Why? Throwing down the gauntlet SCARES OTHER BIDDERS AWAY. The secret to low prices on ebay is lack of competition from other bidders. The less bidders the lower the price. When someone sees something and bids on it but is not the high bidder, they may try two, three, or maybe even four more times to incrementally bid it up. More often than not, they will give up and wait for another identical item in a different auction. I have won more things at low prices with this method than I can remember. It also cannot backfire because your (relatively) high first bid should still be within reason to what you would pay for such an item such that if you get in a bid war and another person wants it bad but you win then you just bite the bullet and pay the cost.

In the case of this manual, if you REALLY need it, don't hesitate to put a first bid of $75 or $100. You may very well be the ONLY bidder and you won't have to pay too much in that case.
