1996 Cavalier stalling at stops

I have a 1996 Cavilier (automatic 2.2L) that has been a great car up until yesterday. It has 108,500 miles on it with all the regular maintenance done. Yesterday on my way home, it began to not want to shift properly. I could hear the rpms get pretty high before it would shift. Then at stops it wouldn't go until I applied quite a bit of gas and got the rpms pretty high. It seemed to run fine when I got the car over 60mph. I know a little bit about cars and am not afraid to get my hands dirty but this seems like a transmission problem? I checked the fluid and it seemed a hair low so I added some but the car is still doing the same thing. I am a mechanical engineering student in college and home to a good mechanic is about 3 hours away so I would really like to check any other possibilities before trying to drive it back there.

Small update after some more in depth searching I found it could be the EGR valve, the fuel pump, or tcc solenoid. I think I can check the EGR valve from the sound of it. I read something about just removing the TCC solenoid as I understood it? It said that it wasn't necessary? And is it easy enough to get to the fuel pump and take it out to test it? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your tranny is going, I have an Automatic 97 that did that, turned out the tranny was shot.
