1994 F150 XLT Codes

Is there any way to get codes on a 94 without having to hunt down a code reader? No one in this area seems to have one for older than 96. HELP!! Check engine lite on and running in limp-along mode. Changed fuel filter, Plugs and coil. Starts, runs 5 minutes then kicks down! Gotta get to work.
