How long can I drive with ripped CV joint???latestgood 03-15-2008, 01:57 AM Hello, I have 2002 Saturn sl2. I believe I have a ripped cv joint because when I accelearate in a slow speed , I hear a rattle. This has been happening for past two months. I know I should take it to the shop but I need it for work and etc. Is it safe for me to drive the car for another week? Thank you Also, what kind of mechanic should I take it to and how much should I be lookating at? vgames33 03-15-2008, 02:26 AM I don't know if you need a CV axle, but a replacement for my '92 Sentra XE was about 250 installed at my local shop. UncleBob 03-15-2008, 02:47 AM you can go a really long time with ripped CV's. The knocking noise will get louder and louder. I wouldn't push it *too* far because if/when it breaks, its very ugly. Seen them rip control arms in halve and break tranny cases. Very expensive even if you don't manage to crash when it breaks Some shops rebuild CV's, but most only replace them. Its just not cost effective to rebuild them anymore. CV's are pretty cheap either reman or brand new, depending on the availibility j cAT 03-16-2008, 08:49 PM Hello, I have 2002 Saturn sl2. They almost always pop on turns or bumps (almost like a baseball card in a bicycle wheel). UncleBob 03-17-2008, 05:24 PM I've never heard a CV joint rattle on acceleration. The worse they are, the more often they rattle 2.2 Straight six 03-17-2008, 05:30 PM How long can I drive with a ripped CV joint??? until it collapses and the driveshaft falls out of the hub. J-Ri 03-17-2008, 05:30 PM Huh... must have to be really bad. I had one snap on me when I was test driving a car to find a "wierd noise", it was popping like crazy turning out of the parking lot and as soon as I touched the gas the joint snapped. What kind of rattle is it? When I hear rattle, I think like a loose heat shield. Maybe I'm just thinking of the wrong noise? vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
