2000 Malibu- three problems

1. There is a horrible pulsating that is felt in the steering wheel and brake pedal when you apply the brakes. It also makes a loud bumpity-bumpity sound to go with it.

2. The engine will just randomly stall while driving it around. Sometimes it will start back up immediately. Sometimes it will not start for about 5 minutes after it has stalled.

3. The hazard flashers and turn signals will work sometimes, and not work other times.

If you folks have any ideas, please share them. I am about to set this thing on fire and push it over a cliff.

First problem - Check your front brakes, may be loose pads or warped rotors.

Second problem - Sounds like a fuel problem. Is the check engine light on? When was the gas filter last changed? Might want to have fuel pressure checked.

Third problem - Possible short in wires. Any common occurance, such as after left hand turns?

Thanks for the tip on the brakes. I'll check them out.

I just changed the fuel filter last night and it stalled on the next trip. There is no Check Engine light on.

I have an ODB2 reader. I guess I should get it out and see if there is anything out of sorts in the computer.

I wasn't sure if the stalling and flashers not working were related or not.

This car may be what keeps me from ever buying GM products again.

I am getting the same stalling issue on my car as well. Wife has the same vehicle that she uses at work and yes same problem. it stalls by itself when driving and sometimes restarts by itself, other times it needs to be pulled over and started up again after waiting a few minutes. I have talked to the dealers in my area and they seem to be leaning towards a passlock problem. I cannot turn my hazards on when the car stalls as it seems like all the power in the vehicle is killed. so it doesn't surprise me that you are finding the same symptoms. HAve you gotten your problem resolved yet? and if so what was the issue.
If not i think it might be a passlock issue as i am running out of ideas. and might take the dealers word for it.

There was a recall on the flasher problem. Look into that. Somthing in your hazard button need to be replaced!

Your brake rotors are warped! See Autozone for theirs! Once I switched to theirs, I have never had a problem!

Stalling, no clue!

I've pulled off the gas tank and checked for water and debris, checked the fuel pump for obvious damage, cleaned a small bit of debris from the pump reservoir. It still stalls.

I've replaced plugs and wires, too.

I don't know if this car has Passlock or not.

It's acting like it is running out of gas when it stalls. My next step may be to check fuel pressure with a gauge to see if the pump and regulator are functioning properly.

Update:

Checked things out with a pressure gauge. The entire fuel system is now officially eliminated as a problem. Perfect pressure with ignition on/engine off(52psi), correct pressure engine running(48psi), pressure regulator working correctly(60psi w/vaccum line disconnected), no pressure leakage after 5 minutes from engine shutoff. :)

My next suspect in this whodunnit is the ignition system.

I have found the culprit!

The ignition switch had burned contacts in it. All I did was tap the dash next to the key while the engine was running and it died. I did it three times and the engine died every time.

The next stop after the ignition switch is replaced is the dealer, has to be programed with the Tech 2.My father had to do this to,an Oldsmobile Cutlass which is the same car line as the Malibu.Luckily he has the Tech 2 and progaming to do this.GM did this for some reason.

This doesn't have the passlock ignition switch. Nothing has needed to be reprogrammed by the dealer.

BTW, Now that the weather has warmed up and dryed out, I can see that my problem is head gasket related.

There's water coming out of the tailpipe in sunny 70 degree weather and a warm engine. Oh well, there was a minor coolant leak from the intake gasket, anyway.
