It is probably running rich, this will cause the cat to get really hot and the engine to run crappy. Things to check are the oxygen sensors, the MAP sensor, and the vacuum line to the MAP sensor, because these things could all cause the engine to run rich and overheat the cat. I'd think that if the cat got that hot it's probably toast, but make sure to fix other problems or it'll kill the cat again. Oh yeah, did you replace the air filter?

vaccum line to map and also check evap canister line as I have see this problem before same exact thing evap is athe coolant resovoir to thr front of vehicle right finder the hose runs down near the a/c and under the alt.

check your airfilter for blockage, mouse nest or just plain dirty. if oxygen sensor is bad car will flood dumping fuel thru motor and catylitic will heat up. also if the engine coolant temp sensor is bad it will do the same thing, also map sensor but that usually does not go bad. toivo
