I want to use a CVT transmission on an electric motor in a car. I was told there has to be a computer to control it and someone else said no. Any body that can help?

As for a short answer to your question, you don't NEED a computer to control the CVT. Take a look at a snowmobile from years ago. Many use CVTs, but no computer control. However, if you are looking to maximize efficiency and battery life, you'll need a motor controller and probably a computer controlled CVT to keep the balance between performance and efficiency.

Electric motors deliver constant torque, so there is very little reason to use any kind of gear box on them, unless you need them to operate over a very wide speed range.

However, a modern CVT gear box, from a Nissan or Honda, does use a computer to set the ratios. Its connected to the throttle amongst other things.
