For my new project I will be building my first rally car, if it turns out good enough I hope to enter it in a local contest. I am planning on doing Marcus Gronholm's #1 car. This will be a pretty straight forward build, with racing harness and CF decals. By the way, If anyone can show me some interior as well as general pictures of this car I would very much appreciate it! :iceslolan

Anyway, here are what I have done so far:

The body was sanded with the mold lines removed and the panel lines deepened. Then I shot a coat of Duplicolor white primer, then cleaned up some more faults the primer has exposed.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/6274d5fd.jpg

I shot the body with a few coats of Duplicolor silver laquer. I try to use duplicolor whenever possible as it is much cheaper than Tamiya and in my opinion easier to work with. Afterwards I shot the body with a few coats of TS-13 to add some shine and to prepare a surface for polishing.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/b1e4110c.jpg

Here it is after it has been polished:
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/e46594db.jpg

The blacklines on the roof is masked off and painted with an enamel marker.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/4787d1e9.jpg
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/d90d7173.jpg

While I was waiting for the paint to dry, I also worked on the chassis. The underbody was shot with the same color as the body, and I wrapped the exhaust with BMF and painted the "engine" per instruction.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/3d087115.jpg

By the way, are anyone else having problems with X-32 Titanium Silver? I'm finding it an extreme PITA to work with, as it wouldn't stay mixed for more than a few seconds before separating. :banghead:

Anyway, the exhaust is lightly weathered, as well as the transmission. I pressed some kitchen foil over a mesh screen to replicate the textured heat shielding. I find it much easier to work with than cigarette foil, as that stuff has a paper backing which I find hard to conform to curves.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/e0ff3c9c.jpg
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/4f7c1e90.jpg

Finally, I have scratch built some dampers to replace the molded kit ones. They are not perfect, but I am happy with them, espcially for my first attempt.
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/7972d2c6.jpg

Anyway, sorry for the repetitive pictures. I got a new camera and I'm still trying to figure out all the settings and features. :icon16:

Looks great so far. A question for you - when you say "enamel marker" do mean one of those paint pens you can get? Because the rubbers look great, much better than brush, and a pen would be much less mess than spray (either can or air-brush).

Grant.

Looks like you are off to a good start!

I have photos of the car that I took from the 2003 Rally New Zealand. The 03 photos are the Marlboro livery although the cockpit remained the same. If you are interested then send me a PM with email address and I can send you large res photos of the cars interior.

Grant,

Yes, I used a Testors black enamel marker. The results look just as good in my opinion as sprayed, and you save a lot of masking tape. :D

WRCfan, thanks for the offer. I PMed you.

Looking very good!
Can you tell me name of that silver color? I'm trying to replace my silver Tamiya color with good auto color so that can help.

The silver paint I used is Dupli-color DAL1679 Silver Metallic Lacquer, you can find those at most auto shops here in the US, comes in a big can with a blue label and color coded cap.

Looks like this:

I think the dashboard was different in 2003 than in 1999-2002.

Hi Davezilla

This is indeed a promising start.
And also some nice tips (like the kitchen foil one) included.

Very nice.
Oh, and I too think that X32 sucks big time.

I prefer to mix X11 and X12 (or the Revell Aqua Color alternatives) for painting parts marked X32...

Looking forward to the next update.

Small update:

Scratch built the rear dampers and brakes as well as the suspension. I must say they do look much better than the molded plastic parts and is well worth the extra effort! :) I added some dry brushing to the engine and suspension to give it some "life".

I have also painted the the skid plates that goes underneath the car. Does anyone know that if these plates are made from metal or carbon fiber? If it's CF what would be a close pattern for it?

I'll be working on some interior stuff next. If anyone can send me some ref pics of this car or a similar 206 WRC car, I would really appreciate it. :) I would mostly just like to know where are the appropriate places to apply CF, and maybe attempt some wiring and etc.

Looking good Dave. Nice attention to detail. My X-32 is okay, only X-12 Gold Leaf is the PITA for me.

Nice work!

I think your coils can benefit from sanding with rough sanding stick to flatten out both ends of the springs. Other than that, that coils look extremely convincing.

I will be following this one :D

Also thanks for the tip, ddtham. I'll make sure to do that for my next one. :icon16:

The problem with a lot of paints are the pigment particles used for the colour. These can be large enough (i.e. have enough mass) to settle rapidly under gravity. A lot of money is spent by paint companies trying to get the pigment particles to stay suspended. This is a particular problem with metallics, as the metal 'flakes' are often bigger again, and once they start settling the whole lot will follow.

But back on topic .... The 206 is looking great, and I love the new dampers.

Great start. I've had good luck with X-31 and X-32 but X-34 metallic brown is killing me. They are all very translucent. X-12 sucks. Have you tried testors gold in the little jars? Great stuff!

Did you have any issue with the white duplicolor primer? For me, the white etches the surface like crazy. I find I have to use the grey to seal the body, then shoot the white. Have you tried airbrushing duplicolor? If you thinks its good from the can, try it with the AB!

Are you talking about the testor enamel paint in the little square jars? I have some of that stuff, but it's old and I can't get the bottle to open, lol. :banghead:

I haven't had any problems with the Duplicolor primer. It goes on very nice and it's easier to sand than the Tamiya primer. I've only used it on Tamiya kits though, so maybe it can have problems with a kit made from inferior plastics.

I hope to invest in an AB when I move to a bigger place (hopefully in the near future), but I just don't have the space for it right now. Plus my roommate will probably complain about the noise.

Anyway, not really an update, but I've been working on the seats. This is my first attempt at making my own seatbelts, I hope it looks okay. I still need to do the lap belts and then the other seat, lol.

That's my opinion as well. You forgot a hell of a lot cheaper, and easier to find. Glad you haven't had the issues I had. Keep up the good work!

Small update:

Finished the seats, painted and decaled some of the bits that goes in the car. Still need to paint and CF the fuel cell. Nothing is glued in yet, I just fitted all the bits in the car to see how it looks like.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/ab6fe04e.jpg

I've seen a few builds on here with the "tunnel" running down the middle covered in foil. Is this accurate? I kind of like the foil there, gives it some texture and makes it look interesting... it also covered up a couple of sink marks that I forgot (or was too lazy) to sand out. :icon16: I know it looks a little sloppy but that's because I just draped it over the "tunnel" loosely because I haven't decided I want that there yet.

I have spring break this week and I will try to get it finished during that time. Let's hope I follow through! :)

That foil goes to Subaru cars, I don't remember it on Peugeots.

No, it's not... :shakehead

And the spare wheel has to take place over fuel tank in the rear not in the center of the car.

Other than that, nice build ! :icon16:

Thanks for letting me know. I will remove the foil. :)

Is the spare wheel face down or up on the fuel tank?

Car is about 90% finished! I didn't meet my goal of finishing it during spring break, but some progress anyway.

Most of the major decals are applied. The red ones are a pain! :banghead:

pieces of the roll cage CFed and painted,

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh266/davezilla17/Peugeot%20206%20WRC%2001/d45b3f82.jpg

Dashboard painted, steering wheel CFed, added a little cell phone. Still need to add the curly wire behind the steering wheel.

Fuel tank is CFed with SMS Hi-Def carbon, too bad it will be mostly covered by the spare wheel, now in it's correct place.

The interior is done now. I will try to finish the body this weekend. Here are a few pictures.

Mirrors and door panels are CFed. I used different types of CF for some variety. (F1 specialties, S27, Modelers, SMS twill and Hi-Def) May not be exactly accurate but hey, it looks good. ;)

I've decided not to use the plastic chrome kit bonnet pins because I think they look a bit cheesy. I have some PE ones from Scale Race Cars but I'm too stupid to figure out how to use it. :runaround:
