WIP: Williams FW12 1/20

... and so the onto the next build which is another first for me... my first resin F1. The project is based on the plastic Tamiya kit - Williams FW13B, with the addition of the Studio 27 aftermarket transkit depicting the hugely unsuccessful car of the 1988 season. I always thought it was a good looking car and particularly like the colour scheme and was really pleased to pick up the transkit for it almost 2 years ago now.

Here's what you get in the box...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00226.jpg

The majority of the cutting alterations are mainly to the floor plan, here is what I started with...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00234.jpg

and after an hours careful measuring, marking checking, and finally cutting (whilst holding my breath!!!) here's what we end up with...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00235.jpg

The S27 instructions are good and give you accurate measurements and guides in order to get the cutting just right as it is quite critical.

The new floorplan in place...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00236.jpg

and with the remaining additions, 2 white metal section which sit under each side pod...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00237.jpg

Just out of interest I took some shots of the FW13B shell compared to the FW12 and did a little Photoshop work to show you the differences.

The lighter image is the FW12 and the faded one the FW13B...

work is going to get a little easier over the next couple of weeks so hopefully I can get back to spending some quality time at the desk again.

Very nice start on this one Sean.I look forward to seeing it develop.I wish I could get some time to build models again but sadly,at the moment things are just too busy for me,but I will be back at the modeling table soon I hope.Best of luck with this and I'll check in for regular updates.

Sean,

Glad to see you back at it again and back on the F1 subjects!! I know you'll be building another stunner. Echoing all of the above I too am too busy with work to get any building done, I only get about 10 minutes a day to drool over the builds here, let alone build, so, the 99T you have helped me a bunch with is delayed for now. Thanks again for your help and I look forward to seeing this progress!

Hi

This is a great little kit. I have one myself that's almost finished - I just need the final push. Maybe this will be it?!

I can happily report that the decals are SUPERB. Easy to work with and fits EXACTLY. I'm making the car that Mansell starred with at Silverstone 1988 - sans wets unfortunately at the time.

One omission from the kit is that the rearwing sideplates should be 'Barcley' light tan. But no decal is provided so a homebrewn mix to match decals will have to be made.

Hi

Just snapped a couple of pics of my still to be finished FW-12

http://www.ipms.dk/Diverse/FW12-1.jpg

http://www.ipms.dk/Diverse/FW12-2.jpg

The hardest part of the livery is to get the round forward part of the yellow area symmetrical and a nice rounded shape. If I should do this again I'd use a more yellow yellow and not the not quite right 'chrome yellow'. But it is not too prominent. The colours are Tamiya white and yellow. Everything blue is decal. The rear wing endplates should match the beige colour of 'Barcley' areas that is in non-smoking guise - i.e. the British GP of 1988.

The body has been gloss coated and polished -and still need the final touches I hope will be kickstarted now!

Hi Sean

Looking incredible as usual. Especially your Photoshop pictures. Nice to see the differences between those two cars.

Nice job on adapting the floorplate. Already looking forward to the next update. And judging by your remark about work getting easier again, it shouldn't take too long (hopefully).

Hijacking my a** !!!! Why are you responding in the first place - it is not your thread (a lot of expletives of your own choice) ?

I was merely giving Sean a few tips for his building of this kit - and if HE don't like that HE ALONE can respond in this way - not YOU (More expletives)

update:

so much for having more time to spend at the desk... best laid plans as they say...

anyway, engine & trans...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00290.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00288.jpg

I have painted this generally as per the instructions, flat alu for the block, dark metallic grey for the trans and for the wing support I have used some 1/24 scale C/F decal. However if you look at the next pic...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00287.jpg

... everything to the left of the red line is completely hidden which while it saves me alot of time detailing, I do find it as though Im only doing half a model, something I have always disliked about curbside F1 kits... Hey ho!

I am adding a few details to the trans area and have washed/dry brushed this area to add a little further detail. The rear light has been replaced by a new white version for the FW12 too.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00285.jpg

This is the revised cooler that sits on the top of the trans and fit snuggly into the engine cover. However I will remove the two cyclindrical items either side and replace these with the Tamiya versions as they are much better detailed.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00286.jpg

Finally after priming, C/F Decaling and spraying...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00329.jpg

the front wing is finished just a few rivets on the end plates need picking out.

all so far so good as they say and thanks amillion for your kind comments and for following. Oh and to Flhansen... hope I can ahieve as good a finish on the body as you have done, great work!

Hi Sean

Sure you can!

I'm struggling with the rear wing. I think that I have to make some other endplates than the etched ones from the transkit, as I find the assembly very flimsy with that heavy main element. The etched endplates also lack some 3D feeling I think.

Will you make a specific race? The markings changed a lot during the season you will probably find out. Mostly the various ICI products advertised, but also the placement of 'Canon' on the sidepods.

Flemming

Hi Flemming,

yes Im going for the Mansell - Hungarian GP with the full tobacco markings and the ICI 'tricotex' markings on the front wing endplates.

It seems like the ICI brands chaged every race, on top of that there is the tobacco/non-tobacco markings... all very confusing.
The S27 instructions explain it all very nicely though thankfully!

more progress...

I did 'the usual' with the rear suspension...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00338.jpg

... and removed the moulded springs, drilled the top and bottom sections, inserted a metal rod into each, about a third of the length of rod is covered with a piece of black rubber tubing and then over the top I used some wire curled around a small screwdriver shank for the new spring. As always a little time consuming but much more realistic than the horrible moulded versions.

I will try and get a better picture up of the finished units.

I also added the remaining details to the top of the trans and also added a little extra detail in the shape of a couple of hoses which run from the cylinders on the top of the trans to each suspension strut.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00343.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00341.jpg

For the rear axles, I thought they were a little under detailed comared to the real versions so using some extremely thin sections of wire painted gold I added these to the trans end of the axle. I will also add some little bolt heads to these too just to finish them off.

The brake cooler ducts are covered in C/F.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00339.jpg

Finally the shell has its coat of white on...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00344.jpg

I have the Williams yellow from the Zero Paints range which will go on next but that will be a few days away while the white dries properly.

Rob,

I have it on good authority that the yellow is the same as the Lotus Camel yellow which is the one I intend to use (plenty left over from my 99T build). There was a debate over at F1M about it not so long ago if I remember rightly.

Hope I'm right on this one :uhoh:

Hi

Do not make the same mistake as me. The yellow I used was TS34 which to me is too orangey which I found out in retrospect. Go for a yellower yellow, as the weren't sponsored by Camel at that time. It should be a bright yellow like TS-16.

Didn't you change your earlier post about which race? I think it said Portuguese, but now it is Hungary. I was there at Estoril in 1988 - but as you surely found out Mansell DNF'ed in that race. Got a few pictures from that race, but only at a quality that today would suffer the delete button on my digital SLR :-( It is all about the glass!

Flemming,

thanks for the heads up but too late the yellow is down! however there was a raging debate about the yellow on the Williams FW12 over at F1M and that because they were partly sponsored by Camel at some of the races that season. I will try and find the thread and post a link here - it was a very heated debate as I remember rightly

Also well spotted about the race, dont know how I got Portugal and Hungary mixed up but it is definately the Hungarian GP - Mansell car.

Which races were that? I tend to doubt that. Barcley is smoke as well, so I don't think that a double exposure of smokers are likely. Michele Alboreto had to abandon his Marlboro ties when driving for Tyrrell due to Camel sponsorship. In 1988 Lotus had the big Camel sponsorship and Benetton and Tyrrell had a small one.

here's the picture of the car, it is named FW12_late season so I presume it was raced or tested towards the end of the season. You can see there are both Camel and Barclays logos on it.

It is a mish mash exhibition car. I know the pictures. Have never raced like that. Show me a race picture from 1988 that shows that and I' ll eat my own FW12. Clue? Well in 1988 Williams had another oilsponsor - Mobil 1 - and on this one it says Elf... Which came with engines from renault in 1989. Camel came as sponsor in 1991.

This is a picture from australia 1988. Much more late than that it can't be... Can't see any clue of Camel there.

Never trust such "showcars". They are typically old cars "dressed up" with the new sponsors - sometimes even "repainted" in the new sponsor livery.:banghead:

the offending yellow is on and finished. This has already had one polish using tamiya course & fine compounds and the a final wash with Johnsons.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00346.jpg

while the shell has been drying properly I turned my attention to the cockpit. This is the kit seat (aw bless! :grinno: )...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00347.jpg

seems almost unthinkable to leave the moulded belts on these days and just paint them, here's the finished article.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00348.jpg

The seat is covered with Embossing powder and I used Scale Motorsport hardware which is superb, for the belts I used some material I bought from a company called DC Models. Tt took forever to arrive however the stuff is the best I have seen and I will be using this from now on for all my belts.

Having left the shell for two days I have started adding the decals...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00351.jpg

Boy was it tricky, lots of gaps and fit problems with the S27 shell and the decals. I think Flemming commented that his went on a dream, either he got a good one or I have had a exceptionally bad one, however after a lot of patience testing time I'm over the hardest ones.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/DSC00350.jpg

The shell will need a final polish and further coat of Johnsons when the remaining decals are done, also left to do is pick out the panel lines with some brown ink.

oh and finally, out of interest I came across this pic of a test version of the FW12, check out the rear wing... or lack of I should say...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Williams%20FW12/low-wing.jpg

Nice work Sean (as ever). I have a question about the metal fastener that connects the seat-belt to the tub... did you make that yourself, or is it aftermarket? If it is the former, do you have any tips about the diameter of wire, etc. If it is the later, what is it and where is it from? The reason I ask is that I will need to do something for my F189 as I too have deleted the moulded seat-belt.

What is Embossing powder and where do you buy this stuff.

You can buy it on ebay its very common, its very cheap and comes in small pots and will last forever. Craft shops also sell it. It is just a very fine powder and ia available in lots of colours.

I simply apply a heavy coat of paint to the part then pour the powder over the top of the paint. I keep a piece of paper underneath to catch all the surplus and this all goes back into the pot. I then spray it with a matt varnish to seal it, job done!

thanks for all your comments as ever guys.

Thanks Bill,

I made the belt holders myself. I simply used a thin piece of wire bent into a 'U' shape using the etch mate. I make the gap slightly bigger than the width of the belt material and drilled the seat back to accommodate it, finally adding an etched bolt head either side of the fastener.
The wire I use is quite thin, I dont know what diameter it is sorry Bill.

One mans dream another ones nightmare as they say... No the decals went on like a dream, because first of all the were the right size and were able to stay on the model! Anyone who have toyed with the original issue Modelers Footwork will know what a proper sized decal, but absolutely no glue and no conforming to curves may do for your bloodpressure. The S27 FW12 decals are top notch Cartograf produced decals. Yes they are tricky to apply, but that will always be the case with a flat piece going over some compound curves.

Your seat detail looks very good, but you could have saved the buckles on the crotch straps. These are fixed through a loop on the lap belts to spread out and ease the load on a sensitive part of the male body :-)

The paint looks good but don't clear it before the rest of the decals are on ;-)

Best regards

Flemming
