Installing a new Head. Any tips?

Ok so many of you are aware of the problems I have had with my 91 TSi.

I bought it with a dropped valve in the first cylinder.

I finally got the head to a machine shop and all the valves were toast, the head also was bad, junk if you will.

I went out to a local forign junk yard I know and the guy pulled a 92 head off a N/T car for me. Its a mitsu head rebuild job with I would guess less then 20k on the head and new valves and everything. Thing looks great!

So, now Im cleaning up the block getting ready to put the new head on. when I pulled the old head I slid the timing belt off the camgears and pulled the head. I was planning to mount the new head and slide the belt back over the new gears and dead time it. Does this sound like a workable idea to you pros?

I have never worked on the 2.0. Only 1.8s and with those you can snap a t belt and pull over and slide a new one on and off you go,freaking bullet proof.

I have bought a new HG and new headbolts. Anything else I should be aware of or be careful about. Any tips on this?

Take your time when setting the timing on the motor. You dont want to have to pull it back apart cause your 1 tooth off. Also I would replace the timing belt if it hasn't been done in a while.

Water pump, and tensioer too man. Like siver said, don't rush the job.

The timing belt that is on it now (the one I slipped off) is a new one with less then 500 miles on it.

As best I can figure the old man who had the car before me snapped a timing belt and it bent some valves (not real bad) but not knowing it was a zero clearance motor he put a new T-belt on and ran it for a couple days until the valves got so screwed to hell one of them fell out of the head (snapped off at the neck)

So my T-Belt is good. Do I really need a new water pump a tensioner? The car only has 90k on the whole thing?

You dont have, Some people recommend changing the the tensioner, its really your call. If you think it will last another 60k of so them dont change it. I didn't change mine with the timing belt, but then again your car is also 17 years old.

The water pump is ofter changed also. Since water pumps tend to go out around 100k or so they dont want to have to tear the timing belt back off 15k later when the water pump dies.
