I thought u could just put it on but the part that goes into the water pump wont fit no matter how hard i try. I even broke one trying to push it in. please tell me how do i replace the bypass pipe...do i have to take of the alternator for it to fit? helpppp

Actually the 90 degree plastic elbow (bypass) goes between the lower intake manifold and tensioner assembly not the water pump itself on a Series II 3800 engine.

In addition to the alternator you will need to remove and/or set aside the tensioner assembly in order to remove and or properly replace the 90 degree coolant elbow from the tensioner and lower intake manifold. Also, there are two o-ring seals that should be replaced on the elbow. The elbow from a GM dealer or AC Delco supplier has the o-rings with it.
