Ok so i started the truck up today started driving everything is fine. I get on the highway about 2 miles from my house. As im getting on the on ramp my 4wd high and 4wd low lights come on together and blink 6 times and then go off the truck does nothing while the lights are blinking it just drives like nothings wrong. Oh by the way it is 1998 explorer xlt all wheel drive 4.0 sohc.
It seems to only do this when the truck is left out over night in the cold i live in kansas city and it has been like 10degrees and thats the only time i have the problem if i park it in the garage the lights dont come on the next day.

I had the same prob on my 99. When you start it up the computer runs a diagnostics to make sure everything is working right if something is wrong in the 4WD system then it sets off the lights. It may have something to do with the cold, maybe a solenoid or something sticks if its below a certain temp?? With mine clearing the codes fixed it. To clear codes you can use a scan tool or just disconect the negative terminal for a few minutes. If you do the negative terminal method make sure that the first time you drive it you include some stop and go and some open road driving because the computer needs to relearn some things.
