91 Pickup Starting Problem - Just a click and whirring noise

I have a 91' Toyota Pickup 4-cyl automatic that sometimes does not start. It usually seems to happen during the day after it's been parked in the sun, after I've driven somewhere or both. It starts fine in the morning, but occasionally with a slight pause after you turn the key. It also seems to start at night.
When it doesn't feel like starting, I hear a single click and a high pitched whirring noise after I turn the key (starter?). Engine doesn't crank. Lights and radio work fine. It often starts up again if I let it sit for a few hours, although I might have to turn the key a dozen or so times. Having the hood open seems to help.
I bought a new battery a two weeks ago and things were fine until today. I made a 45 minute drive in the morning, but it failed to start again at around noon. I also noticed that my radio presets were reset this morning, something that's never happened before.
The starter was replaced a few years ago and the battery is two weeks old. Did the starter go bad? What else should I check?
Thanks!

It does sound like the starter, or at least the bendex part of the starter. If you do your own work, you may get by with just replacing the bendex.
You might stop by an Auto Zone. They will do free tests on various parts and then you will probably know for sure.
If the engine has a lot of miles on it, there could be wear at different parts of the ring gear and when one of those spots line up with the starter, the bendex won't engage. A good test for that is to rotate the engine about six inches and try again. That will put some good ring gear teeth for the starter to use.
HTH and keep us informed.

I have the same problem as well for my 91 Pick-up, but my truck is completed die. It won't start up anymore. I just replaced the starter and still getting the same results.

If the whirring noise is from the starter but the engine is not turning over, the starter is turning but it is not moving forward to engage the flywheel. This usually means a starter problem, but you say you replaced it. Any more info that may help?

Could be a bad timing chain. Take the distributor off, turn the crank wheel by hand, does the rotor turn? If it doesn't turn, chain is broken. Still a good idea to take the timing cover off to see if all the marks line up cause an old chain can be stretched or have jumped out of proper timing position.

could it be a tranny problem also, because my transmission will always pop out of second gear. i change the fluids, and it stop for a while but will pop out once in a blue moon. one of my friend said that if could be something with my flywheel.

If you're not getting the engine to even turn over, then you have a dead battery or poor cable connections...or both.

I try to run a wire from the battery straight to the power line to the starter. I can hear the starter trying to turn, but nothing.

The starter turning but not cranking the engine sounds like a starter problem (the Bendix drive). You might want to pull the starter out and turn the key while your observing the starter. The little gear should turn and move forward. You'll have to connect a heavy wire between the starter housing and the frame to ground it.
