I have to sometimes press on the gas pedal a couple of times before the engine starts up. What could be the cause of this. Could it be the starter.

if your battery were weaK, OR STARTER WAS DRAWING TOO MUCH CURRENT this could cause slow start as voltage/power to fuel pump is lower and the pressure of fuel will not be high enough...I would replace fuel filter and check for proper fuel pressures... fuel filters should be replaced every 30.000mi.....but on a vehicle this old fuel pump is suspect....keep tank at least above 1/4full if its below this you will damage pump.......

May have a tps problem.
