I have a 1997 Lumina 3.1 with 135,000. My problem is that when I first start it, it starts, and then dies right away. When I restart it, sometimes it's fine, and other times it hunts, and almost drops so low that it will die again. What I have been doing is when it starts the second time is, I give it gas right away to get it above 1100 RPm and then it idles fine. I don't get any codes, everything is working fine. I doesn't appear as though there are any vacuum lines off.

I replaced the intake gaskets back in september, and everything was fine up until 2 months ago.

Thanks

my 3.4 was doing the same thing
i had a vacuum leak that i couldnt find
so it kept dying
after starting it up,lets say...........12,000,000 times
the starter would start lagging
but only if the motor was the slightist bit warm
when cold,it would turn over just fine
i dont know the tecnicals but needless to say the mech told me i needed a new starter. so $120.00 later it was like day and night
as for the vac leak
i took the entire intake off and it was the line off the block under the bottom intake

I would be looking for either a throttle plate that's dirty and hangs up just off the rest position sometimes, or an IAC going bad/dirty...

I was wondering about the IAC. Throttle plate was completely cleaned, along with intake when gaskets were done.

Would I get a code for the IAC, or is there any test?

I have a "sister" car, same year and motor ( almost the same mileage) that I'm thinking about swapping the IAC on when it gets warmer to see if the problem follows to the other car. Just trying to get some more ideas, didn't know if Throttle Position Sensor could be a problem. doubt it, but just need to get out there with scanner and see if TPS doesn't have any bad spots on it.

Thanks

When my TPS went bad, it idled real high, and the tranny shift points were all screwed up...doesn't mean they all act like that, but that's typical from what I've seen....you are right, it's worth doing a sweep test...

They don't always code for IAC faults if the engine is in open loop (cold start) mode when the problem happens, from what I've seen....

swap the ect/cts sensor check wires connectors if the computer thinks the engine is hot you will not get proper mixture to start when cold...
