Hi! everyone i came here looking ofr a answer. I have a 97 Cavalier and a couple of month ago my mechanic told me that my a/c evaporator linking all of the refrigerant and i have to replace it.

I bougth it, and i will goint to the mechanic the next saturday, but before that i want to know how it replce it, because i'm a kind of person that when someone going to fix something know how it do it for less and imaging a king of work that the technician going to do, because i imaging that it is a carefully job.. and a friend of me told me that to replece it all the dash has to be remove, and i remember when i change the factory radio it was dificult job and the person that did it broke some part and i don't want to happen again it scare me.

I wonder if you can help me telling me how replace a a/c evaporator on my car and it much better if you can tell me with picture..

So, if when i on my mechanic i know what he going to do and if he is doing well.
Thanks You Very Much

Its actually really easy. Only issue is, you need to have the system bled so it doesn't go into the atmosphere or your self inhale the shit in. Other wise is just undo a couple big connector nuts and re connect everything, then recharge the system.

I have done a bunch of those jobs-- under dash -- dash need not be removed-- heater core comes out after the drain pan and right before the evaporator.....about a 2 hr job- be careful not to crack the drain pan too bad- the tabs on the rear usually break off...

It is under dash- centered-- remove the hush panels on both sides, remove the air ductwork, remove the 13 5.5 mm screws that hold the drain pan up- remove rubber elbow from drain on engine side of firewall, then gently wiggle the drain pan out. Then take off heater core hoses on firewall side, then remove heater core that is exposed after you remove heater deflector. then evaporator is exposed-- recovery refrigerant, disconnect a/c lines at engine side of firewall, and take two screws out that hold evaporator core in place, now drop evap core out--- reverse all steps to put it back together...

Can't get anymore specific than that. If need be i have the GM service repair manuals. I can scan them into my computer and it will show you where everything is.

I am having the exact same problem. Is there anyway I can get the scans? I am actually doing it myself, becasue my mechanic wants $800 to do it. if I replace it myself, he will recharge it for free since he had already charged it and told me it was working fine. Then 5 days later it stops working and he tells me that my evap is leaking. the write up is helpful, but I have not spent too much time with the car, so I am at the stage where pictures and finger paint will help.:banghead: Thanks for the write up and any other info. PS. I was told the whole dash had to come out... so my dash, steering wheel, air bag, stereo and controls are sitting on garage floor.

Thanks again.
