Anti lock break problem

I own a 1997 chevy malibu and I was wondering if someone might have a suggestion to a problem I have. I was driving home and there was a sound like my anti lock brakes was trying to engage. Now I will say that I had seen the yello ABS light come on a few times in the week prior but could not really look at it. Well anyway as I was almost home and I was slowing down to get off the interstate when I got slow enough the abs light came on and the front wheels locked up. So the car will not move forward at all but I can get it to roll backwards. It feels like the brake is engaged whenever I try to go forward but if its stuck why would it let me go backwards. Anyone have any ideas about how I can get it to release the brakes so I can atleast move and get to a mechanic. Thanks for any thoughts on this

I think that you might be having a problem with your base brakes also because the ABS system should not cause your wheels to lock up. Also when the ABS light is on that means that there is a problem affecting your anti lock brakes but your normal brakes should still work properly.
