Help with a 02 Grand Am,,,I think the dealer is giving me the runaround

I have an '02 Grand Am V6 with over 75K that is being serviced at a dealer. One of the repairs being done is the fuel intake. The dealer called me today and told me that the fuel injectors broke during the fuel intake repair and that they had no way of knowing that they were bad upon their first inspection. They're also telling me that they don't have them in stock and it's possible my car won't be ready for another day or so. My questions are:

Is it possible to know if the fuel injectors are bad upon first inspecting a car?

I know dealers usually overprice but how much do they go for and is that something they should have in stock?

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to AF.

What repairs are they actualy doing, a lower intake or injector work ?
Thier is not any fuel intake you are describing, other then a fuel pump.

It is not realy possible just to "look" at your injectors and know if they are bad, thiers several tests that need done to verify they are or are not working.

Injectors are a problem area for the 1999-2005 models.

And these parts are not always in stock items, they'll charge you about $100+ each if you dont have a warranty.

I've found a set of 6 injectors on the net for around $300.

I know i'm leaving aout some information but it's probably a lower intake

What are some of the tests that need to be done to verify that they need to be replaced. According to what I was told, the fuel injectors broke when they were changing something that had to do with the fuel intake.

I have a warranty through AAA but because they weren't diagnosed as being a problem when the claim was first filed, they won't be covered under the warranty. I received a phone call from the dealer and it seems as if they're going to absorb the cost.

I have done many lower intakes on these engines, as well as replacing fuel injectors and never had one physically break. In the future if you are in doubt, ask to see the broken part. Here (Iowa), we are required by law to keep old parts until the customer picks up the car or we cannot legally make them pay for the part in question.

Well if they broke it during work then they would know, but they are fragil and can be damaged pretty easy.
As far as testing theirs a voltage & ohms test to check if they are pulsing, then you have various other tests see below link.

Good thing he's eating the costs since they did do the damage and they can always write a sublet to the claim.

I dont call'em the stealership for nothin. :D

Well here's one thing they should always have them in stock. and if he said they broke them then they have to pay for them :2cents: so I think they are giveing you a run around.:banghead:

If it breaks while taking it apart, technically it is the customer's problem. He has no way of knowing something will break until it breaks. A lot of the time we might eat the cost of a part for a good repeat customer. Of course if he used a hammer and a prybar to remove them, it's his fault.

Injectors just don't break. I have worked around and have replaced hundreds of them and never had one break. From time to time they wear out and have a poor (or no) spray pattern but generally this will cause a performance problem easily detectable. Even if one "broke" while working on the engine, it would not be all of them. It's obvious that they were screwing you around. When you objected, they folded and thats why they are "eating the job".
I suggest that you find a more reliable shop to work on your vehicle.
Happy motoring!!
