Hi, I am helping a friend of mine work on his 97 Tahoe and I cannot figure out what the deal is. This is what I do know,New parts are:cap,rotor,wires,plugs.
It will turn over but will not start. It was running a few weeks ago. I pulled the plugs and had fresh fuel on them and also with the plug out, tryed to turn it over and had no spark at the plug. Any ideas would be very helpful.

Did you install AC delco cap and rotor?
Did it run today before doing work?
WHich Engine?
Do you have spark from the coil?
Does distributor turn when cranking engine (take cap off and watch rotor)
Check camshaft sensor (hall effect switch in distribtor)
Check Crankshaft Position Sensor

The cap/rotor is not ac-delco, I believe they are bosch? It did run a week ago and then died. Since then it hasn't wanted to start, thats when all the part$ and fun began. It has the 5.7L Vortec engine. I will have to check for spark at the coil and also the rotor turning while its cranking. I'll look for the 2 sensors you mentioned while I'm in there. What do you mean by(hall effect switch in distribtor)?

Hall effect switch and camshaft position sensor are one and the same, it is in the distributor.

Go to this site it will give you procedures to test coil, camshaft postiin sensor and crankshaft position sensor.

check electrical connectors to coil these get corroded ....if the ignition control module is replaced use thermal conductive compound and clean mounting surface for all corrosion.....

It will not be in the distribitor,the hall effect switch is for the fuel injector firing only.The vortecs are known for eating coils,I seen this happen on a 4.3 vortec last week and it was a new coil from AutoZone.

Yep, i have the same problem. 96 tahoe, vortec engine, change the leads, plugs, coil unit and then it started. Ran for a moment and stalled, no spark after that. Then changed the rotor button hoping i wasnt going to have to pull the distributor out.. started, ran... stalled...then no spark again (from the coil mind you) Although now i'm finding that the fuel needle is resting on the far right (FULL SIDE) at all times...
I have a new distributor (or "dizzy's) as we like to call them in Australia.
I think thats my last resort considering the crank and cam sensors are inside it right?

main problem, no spark.

when the cap/rotor are replaced replace at same time....inspect for cracked cap.....rotor rotating...carbon tracks....measure wire resistance? compare with old wires ....voltage 12v at coil ? distributor ground clean...
