My 2002 Blazer with only 7000 miles had the check engine light come on and stay on.. does anyone know why this is? I have heard they are "service reminders", but I hate to take a chance. I buy new cars so I don't have to take off work.. this is frusterating. Any help is appreciated.

Usually the check engine light indicates a malfunction with the on board engine electrical and emission system. Once quick area to check is make sure the fuel cap is on tight. This has been known to cause a code and the SES light to come on and is fairly common. At any rate the vehicle is still under warranty so you should incur no charges for having the dealer check it out.

Good luck John

Disconnecting the battery for about 20 minutes will clear the ECM. However, if you don't fix the "problem," the SES light will just come back on. Autozone scans for free.

I also have a Nissan Maxima (2002) and every time I put gas in it if I don't twist the cap on tight enough to hear it click EVERY time the engine light comes on. So now I know to cap the lid tightly. And, once you tighten the cap it doesn't register right away and make the check engine light go off immediately. Sometimes it takes awhile.

Our 01 did this at about the same mileage. Bad EGR valve, expensive little rascal, thank goodness for the warranty. Even if the light goes out, they can still read the "code" and fix the problem.
