2000 2.4 L quad 4 Miss?

Heres the lowdown. I have a 2000 GrandAM SE (sedan) with the 2.4 Liter Quad 4 Motor. My problem is as follows. When I am at an idle *sometimes* my car is fine and idles at around 800 rpms. Other times my rpms bounce around between 1000 down to 200 and on occassion the car dies. I noticed the other day that I thought I smelled gas while sitting at a stop light while the rpms were bouncing around all wierd. It also sounded like the motor had a miss. Once the car gets going it runs great, but first gear seems to be where the problem lies. It did run a "little" doggy when first jumping on the interstate. Also another thing I noticed, whenever the engine would "miss" the light TCS OFF would blink. The Service Engine Soon light is on constantly atm as well. There are new plugs and wires on it. Any ideas of what it could be or am I better off just taking it in? I heard these motors have lots of sensors and things like that which could be hard to track down. Thanks for any help!

Welcome to AF.

Your best bet is to get it scanned to seee why the SES light is on and for any other trouble codes.

If you have Bosch plug & wires, thats possibly the trouble.

DO a search in the Grand am forums, you'll find helpfull info pertaining to your miss very common.

Alright, Thanks bro! I'm going to take it in today to get it scanned. Looked through the forums and found some "similar" experiences. I'll post an update later on with what I find out. Thanks again for the advise!

Alright. Got the car into the shop today and found this out. scanned it and it threw three different codes for the map sensor as well as two codes for random misfire. Noticed the boots on the plugs were dry and cracked so put some new ones on. Noticed there was NO egr valve.............. hoping this is the issue. going to go to picknpull tomorrow to try and get one. Will update when I know some more!
