HELP! Intrument Cluster Lights Went Out!

Hi, all:

I recently bought a 91 PA, adn it needed a few fixes. When I brought the car home all of the lights in the dash worked just fine. I replaced the turn signal flasher after my son tore apart the underside of the dash. Got everything back together and went to start teaching him how to drive (another long story), and found that the instrument cluster light is now inoperative. The interior light rheostat is working properly. The fuse is not blown.

Here's my two questions:

A) what could have happened, given that we only replaced the flasher and I didn't see any loose wires while the underside of the dash was dismounted; how to check for different problems without taking the instrument cluster out?

B) If I end up having to take the instrument cluster out to inspect it or replace the light, how do I get the wood trim off? (I've got directions for the other parts from another post).

All help is greatly appreciated.
