a/c pulley

hey its me again with another problem. I have a '96 grand am gt with the 2.4 The a/c doesn't work and I've had the a/c clutch removed due to grinding. 2 years later (today) I can hear the bearings in the pulley going out. Does anybody know the easiest and cheapest way to fix this problem? I dont care about the a/c working and i dont think bypassing it is an option but I'll do it if it is. Can I put a new plain pulley on it? Thanks again in advance

This has been brought up before, there is no part to replace the compressor pulley, and a shorter belt will not work on this engine. You may try replacing it with one from a salvage yard, if you ask nice and tell them it doesn't need to work, you may find one very cheap. I don't know of anyone ever installing a used compressor in a vehicle, so there's probably not much demand for them.

That is why you are the experts, I did not know that the quad did not have the a/c bypass pulley.

yeah thier's probly at least one thread in the top page of this forum(GA) with this info and a link to the V6 pulley. :D

haha, I remember that. I was so sure you were wrong that I spent hours trying to find one. I don't know why they wouldn't make one for it... it's possible. Maybe I should go into business making them. :biggrin:

Im thinkin this is why Im getting about 50 mpg less per tank the last 2 months. Taking extra power to turn the belt with bad bearings

i found a bearing for 18 bucks on rockauto.com, Ive never has the compressor out it doesnt look like it will be too hard to remove. Hopefully this is the reason about the bad gas mileage. I keep getting a p0440 code for vacuum malfunction but everything seems to be working and not any holes in the lines and the gas cap is sealing. Maybe the gas blend this winter in MN is bad this year Ive heard other people talking about it this year.
