98 breeze wont start

It died while driving. It sounds funny turning over. I think the timing belt may have let go. It has a 2.0 engine. What happens when the belts break? Are they an interference engine? How much work is involved with a timing belt change? I need step by step procedures if anyone can direct me to where I can find them.

Ok I pulled the little cover off the hole on the timing belt cover and the pulley is turning while the engine is cranking. So Its not a broken timing belt? Can the pulley or timing belt jump teeth? It fired once and popped back through the intake. When it tuns over it sounds like a lack of compression. The engine was overheated prior to this happening but still started twice after. Now its not going to start at all until I can figure out what is wrong. How much tolerance do these engines have to overheating? Also, how do I tell if the engine is dual overhead or single overhead cam? It is 16 valves but there is only one pulley that the timing belt goes around on the top of the engine.
I see many people have read my post but know one has responded. If Someone can direct me to where I can find the info I need that would also be of help.

It sounds like you might have jumped a few teeth on the timing belt, or it is just old and the teeth are breaking off. As far as the overheating, aluminum cylinder heads do not like be too hot. You have probably warped the head. This will cause a lack of compression because now the cylinders are not completely sealed anymore.

They are not an interference engine, so you should not have any damage from that, but to fix the warpage, you are gonna have to pull the head off anyway to have it shaved, so you can inspect the valves and the pistons while it is off. As for good step by step instructions, you can pick up a Haynes or Chilton manual from the local parts house.

They really are not an interference engine? Everything I could find online suggested they are. Maybe I will change the belt first to see if the head got warped. Ill probably junk it if it is or find a cheap engine to throw in it. I found one at a local scrap yard for $300.
