I need Help,I have a 1996 Stratus 2.4L with Auto trans that I bought for my daughter, it will start, run for 5 seconds and dies, the headlamps flash and I don't have a alarm system but it does have the factory keyless entry system but the remote has been lost. No matter how long I wait, as soon as I open the door the headlamps flash and the car starts and dies. I have tried using the key to open the door and tuen the key as the owners manual says, tried both keys and same think. Is there any way to by pass this so it will run? Do I need to change one of the computers, if so which one first as you know they are like $500 a piece. Can I by pass the door relay somehow? Where is that located?
I really appreciate any help as my daughter is stranded.

Well it seems that the Dodge Stratus, Chrysler Stratus and Chrysler Cirrus have more in common than I thought. I had the same problem with my Chrysler Stratus if had the doors unlocked the engine anti-theft device would kick on in about a minute and if I didn't use the remote key fob to unlock again it would start up and die after about 5-7 seconds. I figured out that this really was the anti-theft system so I asked the dealer if they could replace the remote fob but the incompetent fools as they seem to be told me that there is no way to ether get a replacement key remote fob (apparently they don't make them anymore) or even just disable the anti-theft system (it can't be done they say). So I looked around some more and phoned up some other dealers in other countries and they were much more helpful and they told me that they would have to replace some electronic anti-theft computer thing box and that it would cost me around 750€ and take 2 hours and also change the remotes and keys but nevertheless it could be done. Also consulting a company that deals specially with hight market alarm car systems a guy there told me that somehow he could disable the anti-theft system and fit me with a new remote system but I would much rather like to see the original so I'm probably going to go with the original spare part or at leas the one that will retain the whole future capabilities.
So your best bet is to find a dealer that knows their way around these older cars and if they say that it can't be done find another one that does because I just couldn't take the fact that there is no solution.... or if you think that it is too expensive there is a guy in Hungary that you can send him your lock anti-theft thing box and he decodes it for you for around I think 300€ but you still need to fit an after market remote system to open or close the door or just do it by hand.

Hope it helps and you get your daughter car running again but I'm note 100% sure that your car has the exact same systems as mine and that the problem is of the same nature.

Bye
