Hello everyone!

After doing the Aston Martin DBR9, I decided to do an older racecar...something powerful but not as "high tech" as the Aston, so, out of the storage room came the kit of the Peugeot 405T 16GR. The Camel sponsored vehicle drove to victory by Ari Vatanen in the 1990 edition of the Paris-Dakar rally.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02781.jpg

This is one of my all time favorite kits, in fact, I think this one made me a full time (so to speak) modeler.
I was lucky enough to buy 3 boxes of this kit when it was originally issued. Lucky because this kit is getting harder and harder to find, not to mention itīs rising cost.

A note for all kit collectors out there: There are 2 versions of the kit box, one in english and another with only japanese text. I was told by a Tamiya representative that the japanese box kit is very rare now, and itīs collectible cost is almost twice than the english box version.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02807.jpg

Now, on to the kit...

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02783.jpg

When you open the box, you get the feeling that you are seeing parts of a recent Tamiya kit, even when the kit is 18 years old. The detail is absolutely gorgeous and the engineering of the kit is flawless. There are some sink marks but all of them are hidden in places you wonīt see in the finished model.
A special note for all young modelers out there...Inlcuded in this Kit is the 1990 Tamiya catalog. It is really interesting to compare this little list to the beautifully printed catalogs we see today.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02788.jpg

This racecar uses very basic technology, so you wont see any sensors or complicated computers. I will try to replicate the basic elements used in the real car, so research is a HUGE step here.
You wonīt find any detailed schematics or photos in the internet. I spent almost 2 weeks looking for decent photos without success, so I sent a mail to the recent home of this racecar, the Peugeot Museum in France (Musée de L'Aventure PEUGEOT) asking for some photos or info that I could use.

After a couple days, I was delighted to receive a mail from Jean-Louis Laine, who is responsible of Peugeotīs Historic Documents. The mail contained a lot of GREAT photos of the real car!!! I got magnificent body, cockpit and engine details!!! I burned this photos and the ones I could find myself in a reference CD. (Thanks Jean_Louis!!!)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02803.jpg

Well, letīs begin!!

I bought old carbon fiber material decals to use in the engine compartment and seats, and this will be my first attempt to do a race worn vehicle, so I ordered sand pigments from Tamiya and MIG.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02802.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02799.jpg

First, I painted the engine parts with Testorīs Metalizers. I will add a black wash later to bring the molded details to life:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02793.jpg

All pulley/belts are molded in one single part, so I decided to sand off the belts and use hair rubber rings instead. My wife had a box of this rubber bands and I found out that they have the right texture and width to use with the pulleys!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02791.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02798.jpg

This is how the engine looks with the new belts, and after some detail painting. I installed Distributor plugs and wires:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02818.jpg

This is it for the moment! I hope you like this WIP, and I will try to update it regulary!!:iceslolan

Erm..what about the "dromedary" logos?

You are right!! I forgot to tell you guys about this!

All CAMEL logos are included in the kit decals!! The illustration in the box cover doesnīt show those markings, but they are inlcuded in the decal sheet.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02819.jpg

Nowadays, this is a different story...what you donīt see in the box cover, is what you DONīT get :icon16:

Wowowowowwwwooowwwwwwww........
I think I've found my 2008 afmoty !! :naughty: :icesangel

I have this great desert lion to build too (and 1989 Pionner one too).
I have the chance to live not too far from Peugeot museum and have taken a lot of pics with special authorization of the museum (which allowed me to open the cars to take pics of the inside and the engine bay on several cars shown in the museum).

I also plan to build this great tamiya kit with a lot of details...
When I will have my exclusive modeling room with computer, books, desk... and everything needed in the same place. Soon I hope (well I say that every new year, "this year I move to a new home "! but... maybe...:icon16: )

So no need to say I will watch your build line by line and pic by pic !! :naughty:
This kit is one of the best tamiya kit which can moreover easily be improved with a lot of details...
This must be a really nice model and give an awesome result !
all my encouragements for the build !!

Let me know if you miss some pic, I took all details I could, from inside net to brake cooling tubes...

Where are you located? I'd love to get my hands on a package of those "belts".:iceslolan

I built this kit a couple of years after it was issued (actually I received the Pioneer version as a gift and ordered the Camel decals from Tamiya since I preferred that version more), and it's still one of my favorites in my collection.

Just beware of the sand ladders mounted below the rear wing. They are the only area that really needs improvement. Of course when I built it back then, I didn't even know what sand ladders were!:uhoh:

I'm looking forward to your build.

Hi

I will follow this WIP with very attention, because i will receive a 405T16 next week. Im curiouse about how to use the weathering by tamiya. I want to do mine with desert dust. Keep going with that great work.

I live in Mexico City, but the rubber rings are a US made product, I am sure you can find them up there. If not, let me know.

I will sand off the molded sand ladders and build new ones with sheet styrene. I will add scratchbuilt retaining belts.:iceslolan

That's the look I am looking for...An "after a dry, desert stage" look. In fact, I will do a base with some sand to show the model "in action". Hope it turns out nice :icon16:

I added wiring and plumbing to the engine/tranny (thanks to rallymaster for the GREAT reference photos!)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02826.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02823.jpg

And heres the complete assembly, including the engine block:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02838.jpg

I painted the rear suspension arms with Testors metalizers and added new brackets with straight pins.

This is it for the moment, but Iīll have some more progress in a couple days!:iceslolan Thanks for watching!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02850.jpg

Here are the brakes and control arm...For the brakes I used Crazy Modelerīs photoetched parts and resin calipers. The assembly of the brake discs is tricky, but the final result looks great!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02852.jpg

Since I will show the model with all the tires on, and to avoid problems during wheel assembly, I will put the brake discs directly in the rims. I added brake lines to the calipers.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02853.jpg

And hereīs the complete rear suspension/engine assembly...I added some rivets to give it a better look.

If I can suggest something, the breaded hoses are looking a bit flat. You should fill them with a small electric wire or even a thin wire of tin soldering used in electronic. Just a tip

Another update! :grinyes:

Remember when I said in my opening post that this kit engineering was flawless?? Well, I take that back after seeing the engine parts!! :banghead:

ALL engine parts are oversimplified and innacurate. The engine drawing in the box cover is very close to the real thing, but the parts provided in the kit will NOT build anything remotely close to that. For example, the exhaust tubes are hollow and look awful:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02916.jpg

A lot of scratchbuilding is needed to make the engine look good. For example, this part is just unusable:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02917.jpg

So, I did a new part out of solder and aluminum tubes. I will add some heat staining prior to installing:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02918.jpg

Next, another part of the exhaust/air filtering system was filled (the pieces were hollow) and sanded:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02922.jpg

Did you notice the hose straps?? Hereīs a GREAT tip: Next time your wife drags you to the mall  , check out the nail care stores...I found this roll of nail decoration stripe:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02929.jpg

The stripe is 0.7 mm wide, and it is very thin, almost like bare metal foil..Best of all, it has adhesive, just like Bare metal foil!!... I bought the aluminum colored roll to build the hose stripes, but thereīs a wide variety of colors to choose from!!:grinyes:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02927.jpg

Well, thatīs it for the moment! Iīll try to make more progress over the weekend!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02933.jpg

And hereīs the complete engine/rear transmition with the first pieces of the exhaust and air filtering system installed:

Hereīs some advance!! :iceslolan

I instaled the shock absorbers:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02974.jpg
Next, I painted the rear wheel covers with Tamiyaīs chrome yellow. Then, I covered the part with old carbon fiber and applied some dark red (semigloss)paint to the inside. I was told Peugeot used this red latex paint as a sand abrasion resistant.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02973.jpg
By the way, I will add some sand weathering later to this area to tone down the carbon fiber a little:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02971.jpg
Here is the engine/rear suspension with the new parts installed:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02988.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02992.jpg
I am still working on some engine bay pieces. Almost all of them need some scratchbuilding to look decent...hereīs an example:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSC02987.jpg

Hang in there please!! A new update will come very soon! Hope you like the progress! :icon16:

Finally some progress!! :lol2:

This image shows the engine bay with more air filtering elements installed....like I said in a previous post, I had to update or scratchbuild all the original pieces. The only piece missing here is the main exhaust tube, but I will install it after I glue the engine to the chassis...that way, I will be able to align this tube properly.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/1.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/2.jpg

I sanded off 2 electrical boxes that are molded in the cockpit that should not be there, and eliminated the one over the transmition tunnel, because it should be bigger. I primed and painted the chassis after I drilled all the holes were the wires will be.
I also instaled the seatbelt supports.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/3.jpg

Next, I installed the fuel cells in the underside of the chassis (aluminum braces are represented with nail strips ...I even got the wife to hold this part for the photo)and did some wiring to the moulded box in the rear panel of the engine bay.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/5.jpg

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/4.jpg

As far as I know, they don't. Just look at some old footage were they arrive at a hairpin... they definitely don't have a handbrake :p The reason behind it has something to do with diff's that couldn't be unlocked yet at that time. So when you would pull the handbrake the whole car would stop dead in its track, including the engine...
