Does anyone know if it's worth changing out the water pump myself, which I have never done before but am willing to learn, or to pay the $250 and have it done in the shop?
My warts are showing...

if your 90' lumi is like mine... it should be easy.... the water pump should be on the upper front of the motor... once you have the belt off, you'll need to remove the four bolts holding the pully to the pump. (this could be tricky being that it will try to turn). once you have it off there should be eight to ten more bolts underneith the pully, simply remove them and the pump housing should come off.. a quikie inspection and removal of the old gasket. Once you've done that just reverse the proccess and bobs your uncle. you've just done a water pump... be sure to use gasket sealer too..

Agree, they are easy as long as you understand how to relieve tension on the belt tensioner. And loosen the water pump pulley bolts before removing the belt, makes it easier, and do final tightening after belt is back on.
Sometimes a strap oil filter wrench will work to hold a pulley too.

I find that if you try loosening the 4 bolts holding the pulley on before you remove the belt it makes life a lot easier. Other than that like everyone else said the rest is a cake walk.
