What's wrong with my clutch/transmissin? '99 Prism

I am currently very low on funds, but shops don't seem to understand that; so I'm afraid to actually have my car checked out.

My 99 prism has about 150k miles on and the clutch does not "grab" until the pedal is almost entirely up. Also, in 4th and 5th gear, if I am not very gentle on the gas, my RPMs spike to near critical levels. Do I need a new clutch? The current clutch is only about 2 and a half years old.

Dear mcurrie84 .. sounds to me like your clutch needs adjustment or is worn out already. Since it is only 2 years old I would suspect it's not the clutch but your clutch master cylinder that may need attention. As the system is supposed to be "self adjusting", maybe you just need fluid topped up or something like that. I would sure hope it's in the operating linkage of your clutch and not the clutch itself. You have a clutch master cylinder, next to the brake fluid resivoir, a hydraulic line to the bell housing and a clutch slave cylinder which operates the clutch throw-out bearing (operates the actual clutch). Check the fluid levels and maybe you have a little leak or a weak Master cyl. Maybe you have air in the lines and just "bleeding" the system (like brakes) will fix you up again. Anyway .. my 2 cents, and I hope it cheap and easy!!!!!!! DangerDude
