WIP: 06 C6R Le Mans Winner

I decided to take the plunge on this car and I wanted to show you guys what I have so far. This is the beautiful Scale Motorsport kit done in collaboration with Revell. It comes with everything you need to build the 2006 Le Mans class winning C6R including the Revell kit, instructions, & decals. The turned aluminum parts, especially the rims, are quite impressive.

http://gallery.mac.com/jsavarese/100149/IMG_3625/web.jpg

I started with the rims & tires. The kit comes with new brake rotors, hub sections, & calipers. The rotors & calipers are resin & of decent quality. With a little clean up they turn out real nice. The only issue I had was drilling out the rotors on the sides where the cooling fins are. Most are filled in by resin. This only presents a problem if you are displaying the car with the wheels off.

Here are the rims & tires completed...I applied a black wash to the rims to dull them down just bit. The aluminum is kind of bright. The rotors were painted a dark gunmetal color as the real car has carbon fiber rotors that do not shine! The tires were dirtied up a bit using the Tamiya weathering kit. This will not be a full raced version, but I will add some wear & tear for a little added realism.

Here are some mock up pics of the body & chassis sitting on the wheels. I'm going to try & get this car as low as possible. I built the regular Revell kit box stock last year & the ride height is TERRIBLE!!

Sorry about the bad pics...I'll try & snap some new ones after I repair my light box.

I'll be watching this one closely :sunglasse

For ultimate accuracy, the wheels should be painted silver, as they are painted on the 1:1. Don't get me wrong, I love the wheels in this kit, but in all honesty I'd have been perfectly happy if they had done these wheels in resin because they're supposed to be painted. Race cars don't need "blingy" bright wheels. This would also lower the price of the kit by a good margin. I'd also love to see these wheels, in aluminum or resin, available separately as they work with a lot of other subjects.

Agreed, the wheels are absolutely beautiful and I would have a hard time painting them but if you want accuracy, silver is the way to go. The Porsche GT2's last year used very bright almost chrome wheels, but not the vettes.

I am thinking about buying the SMS' kit, but I have read in a couple of webs that Revell's kit is not a good base for '06 Corvette. It is said there are several areas that should be modified. What do you think about it? I am not an expert concerning Corvettes!
Cheers,
Carlos.

I am no expert, but you can see what I had to do to make mine more accurate in the picture found in my sig. I did a lot of changes and it was a pain but fun. I cannot fully attest to complete accuracies as I have never seen a c6-R. I worked with what I knew from their racing site.

Edit - I cannot say I know if SMS did anything to the chassis pan from Revell either. I know for a fact that the diffuser needs to be completely redone. There are 15 diffuser fins on the real car and I think 5 or 7 on the Revell and they are way too thick.

Revell sort of always leaves out the side windows (don't know why)
also the exaust panels are rectangular, not curves. the whells look awesome, but doesn't the bolt seem to be alittle to small

this looks like it will be a great build none the less

Cool! I didn't know such a kit existed. I'll be following this closely.

Keep up the good work!

The SMS kit has a decent set of side glass for the kit. They printed the black masking area onto clear acetate sheet which the builder cuts out and applies to the model. Might be tricky to get it perfect, but SMS did accomodate for Revell's lack of side glass.

The SMS kit comes with everything you need to build the car accurately. It includes a complete new PE rear diffuser & support rods for the rear wing. There is also new rectangular exhaust shields for the rocker skirts. The kit also comes with all the CF decals & patterns to do up the undercarriage & rear clip area. Oh, and they also include the rear side marker lamps with both decal & PE parts. The window frames for the doors with the windows are in there as well! Like I said, this kit is COMPLETE!

The one thing that is innacurate with the Revell kit is that the roll cage and framing are not wide enough because of the molded in door panels. It should really go out into the doors. The body needs slits cut in it for tow hooks and the molded in front screen is a pain to grind out. The ride height need some fixing and the front left wheel is too far back in the wheel opening(same problem on the street kit). The molded in window net should be removed and made with tape.

there was no window net on the LM version

Sorry for using this WIP for asking about C6R kit but... is Revell's kit 1/25th or 1/24th scale?

Thanks in advance.

I finally have an update for you guys on this. It's been hard finding modeling time with a 5 month old! I've got most of the chassis complete. I started adding a little more detail to this one...it's too bad it will all be covered up. i added some braided line & fittings to the rear engine area. I still have one of the oil cooler hoses I have to re-attach. I added some racing electronics & an aluminum fire extinguisher to the interior. I also added some wires & connectors to the battery. I used cigarette foil for the heat shielding on the firewall. The steering column is aluminum rod with a #4 line fitting on the end. The inner net was made from masking tape & some mesh I had lying around.

http://gallery.mac.com/jsavarese/100157/IMG_3676/web.jpg

I added a few extra details under the hood too. I added plug wires, an aluminum overflow bottle, some CF decals & some ProTech bolt heads on the engine cover. I also used 2 part clear to give it a nice shine. Everything still needs buttoning up, but you get the general idea.

I got the body, hood & doors painted & cleared today. The paint is Zero Paints Le Mans C6R yellow over a white primer base. I then topped it off with three coats of Omni 2 part urethane clear. I'll wait 24 hours to wet sand out a few pieces of trash in the paint & then it's on to decals!!

The next time you see this it should be in the completed gallery. I decided to make this the #63 car instead. I'm a big Ron Fellows fan & I like the red windshield banner. It really makes the car stand out.

The body is all decaled up & needs final assembly. I'll be working on the door frames & the rear spoiler over the next few nights. The car should be completed for the NNL East in two weeks.

I took some pics outside so you guys can see the color! It really pops!!

Questions & comments welcome.

The scuff plates are off the PE set that comes with the transkit. The instructions have you use .5mm rod & .75mm tube with PE plates on top. I tried this & didn't like the look. I used stick pins painted black with PE bolt heads on top painted clear blue. Much more realistic looking IMO.

Great build Jay thanks for sharing your experience with the group. As a thank you for posting your build I would like to send you a free set of our newly released BBV decal set, you can see what it looks like at our web site:
www.scalemotorsport.com (http://www.scalemotorsport.com) Please email me (matthew@scalemotorsport.com) your ship to address or just let me know your last name and zip code if you have ordered over our web site we will have you in our database.
To everyone that commented on Revell's inaccuracies in their original kit it is important to understand that many times as in this particular this subject, Revell had very early access to the subject, way before it actually raced so they were working with information that went through a fair amount of changes by the time it actually hit the tracks, this is one advantage aftermarket companies have over the kit manufacturers because we really don't have access to anything until the car has ran a few races. Thanks again to everyone that shared their thoughts and commnets regarding our C6R kit. Now that we have added the BBV decal set you can build the baddest vette on the planet ever created! Regards, Matthew Wells

I don't know why i didn't hear of you guys before. I've been searching high and low for carbon fiber decals and until tonight, i've pretty much come up empty for real scale looking ones. I'll be talking with you soon about placing an order. Do you have any other liveries in the making?

Sorry to bring this up.
I just bought the SMS transkit Don't wanna wait for the ST27 kit, and to come back on what i've said,I didn't think there was that much part and great stuff here.Sorry for that.
SO, waiting to do the Bad boy version (decals already in), i have a question. What have you done to get the car so low? are the tyres a bit bigger than the revell ones? did you bend something? I read you didn't use the metal axle. Does it help to push the car closer to the floor?
thanks a lot
