I pulled out of my friends driveway and my 1996 2.0 l breeze just died. Engine light came on for a brief second. Then I coaster to shoulder of road. Engine rolls over but sound different real quiet and doesn't start or even attempt to start. How do I check to see if timing belt is gone ? Some where else I read might be cam shaft sensor if it is not timing belt is this possible ?

second question is if it is timing belt have I done serious damage to internal engine parts turning motor over.

if the cam sensor is out, no it will not start, if the timming belt snaped, yoou probally didnt do damage to the valves cause the pistons have enough clearence to prevent it from contacting valves, HOWEVER, check the timing belt, if it is snaped, replace it along with the water opump, and check compression on all 4 cylinders
