I have a 1997 Ford F 150 4X4 The 4x4 light on the dash comes on when I pull the Floor lever but the front wheels are not engaged. The fuses are ok. Is there a solenoid or some kind of switch on the transfer case that engages the front wheels?

I have an 01 did same thing finally tracked down plastic pnumatic lines on passenger side fender under hood above wheel. They had dry rotted and bad connection. This was right at a connection i just cut back half inch reconnected and it works. Check it out worth a try

Thanks for the reply on my 1997 Ford 4X4 question. I did find two plastic lines going from the front axle to the fire wall on the passenger side over the wheel. These lines have a plastic cover over them so I couldn't see if they are cracked or rotted. I will take them off and pressure test them when the weather warms up some. 10 degrees is a little too cold to crawl under the truck right now.

I removed the plastic lines that run from the front axle to the electric valves on the fire wall, pressure tested them --- no problem. Has anyone else had a problem with the front wheel drive not engaging?

I have an '04 F150 with the same issue. Fuses all checked out OK. I have a dash knob to switch from 2X4 to 4X4H and 4X4L and they light up as if all is well. Anybody fixed this yet on their truck?

I have a 2001 4x4 like the other guy and what he told you is right the two vacum selinoids is what controls your lock up. One is to pull in your lock up and the other is to unlock, you can switch the vacum line around to find which one is not working. I had to change one of mine selenoids and the lines were fine.
