Welcome to AF. You must be new to cars to think that :). Engineers are always finding new ways to screw us over :banghead: . I think the best way would be to paint them without removing them. First off, It looks likey they're a PITA to remove. Second, you can't paint the outside anyway (or the paint will rub off when you adjust them), and both sides of the inside are accessable with a small brush. Try the technique here http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=764819 if you want to eliminate brush strokes.

Good luck.

Welcome to AF gingn.

I Cant believe that guy used a (foam)brush,
I've even seen rollers used before, with house paint(latex).

Brush painting is NOT an option with plastic parts,
if you want it to look good & professional.

If you clear coat them and allow to fully dry befor re-installing them,
they shouldnt rub off much if any paint/clearcoat.

I was trying to remember which vents the 96 had, do they look like these rounds (http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/gif/large/0900823d800e5ecf.gif)?
Usually a screw driver will pop the vents out.

It has good tips on making the best out of your paint project.

Hope that helps
